Texas Longhorn named Poncho Via with nearly 11-foot horns breaks Guinness World Record

Poncho Via, a Texas Longhorn, looks like if he walked into a glassware shop, every last plate would be knocked off the shelves. The steer has set the Guinness World Record for the longest set of horns for Texas Longhorns.

According to NPR, Poncho's horns were measured to be 10 feet, 7.4 inches long.

Last month, on May 8, when measurements were taken, Poncho, at age 7, not only took the title for longest horns of all living Texas Longhorns, but has "blown all past contenders out of the water" according to a release from Guinness World Records.

Poncho is from Goodwater, Alabama, where he is taken care of by the Pope family. They first took him in as a pet in 2013, after Jeral Pope saw the breed during a hay ride out west and decided that he needed to have a Texas Longhorn for himself.

"Up on the hill, outlined against the sky, were three or four longhorns," said Pope in the Guinness World Record release. "They stood out like anything on the crest of that mountain – it was the prettiest thing. I told my wife, we got to have one of them."

He named Poncho after a television character from the 1960s who was based on the early 20th century Mexican Revolution figure Pancho Villa, according to the release.

In Clay County, where Goodwater is, Poncho is a bit of a local celebrity, according to Pope.

"All my neighbours round here, any time they have company, they come over to see the longhorn. He’s just a big, gentle character," said Pope in the release.

People frequently bring treats like carrots and apples. But Poncho has a sweet tooth – he also really likes marshmallows.

Dennis Pope, or Jeral Pope Jr., said in the release that the achievement of the World Record is not only Poncho's. It reflects on his father's community spirit.

"(Dad) likes to bring that positive influence to his family and to the community. Poncho brings an opportunity for a different level of 15 minutes of fame," he said in the release. "Unfortunately, this is one of the poorest counties in the state of Alabama, (but) now it's got (the) claim to fame of having the world record longhorn steer."

People on Twitter are excited about Poncho's big moment as well.
