Texas A&M University just fired Jimbo Fisher — and now, they owe him over $75 million.
Fisher, who came to A&M in 2017, never won over nine games in a season.
The buyout will be the largest ever made in college football history.
Texas A&M fired coach Jimbo Fisher on Sunday, a move that will cost the school more than $75 million and end a tenure that began six years ago with the Aggies presenting him an engraved national championship trophy missing only the year.
Instead of winning the coveted title, Fisher never won more than nine games in any season.
This season, the Aggies are 6-4 with just two games left.
Fisher, who won a national championship at Florida State University in 2013, left FSU after eight seasons for the massive 10-year, fully guaranteed Texas A&M contract in 2017.
His contract was extended to 2031 in September 2021 after he led the Aggies to a 9-1 record during the 2020 pandemic season — their best season under his leadership.
The new contract promised Fisher an annual salary of $9 million starting in January 2022, per the university. After a raise to $9.15 million in 2023, the contract promised an increase to Fisher's base salary by $100,000 per year.
Overall, the university promised Fisher almost $100 million over 10 years, in one of the most expensive contracts ever signed by a university football coach, per Bleacher Report.
The terms of his contract mean Fisher is owed the entirety of what remains on his deal — whether or not he gets another job in coaching.
The buyout is the largest ever made in college sports history, per The Texas Tribune.
The second-highest buyout of all time was less than 1/3 Fisher's deal — given when Auburn paid out about $21 million when it fired Gus Malzahn.
He was hired to replace Kevin Sumlin, who was fired with one game left in 2017 with a 7-5 record that year and a 51-26 mark in six seasons.
But Fisher didn't even match the success of Sumlin, much less elevate the team under his command.
