Texas A&M football set to hire former CSU coach Steve Addazio, per multiple reports

Former Colorado State football coach Steve Addazio will soon be coaching in the SEC.

The 62-year-old Addazio is set to be hired as the offensive line coach at Texas A&M, first reported by TexAgs.com and later confirmed by several other national outlets, including ESPN and FootballScoop.

Addazio was fired in December shortly after concluding a 3-9 season in his second year in charge of the Rams.

He is owed a $3 million buyout to be paid over the final three years of his original contract, but per the terms of his CSU contract that number would be reduced by his salary at Texas A&M.

Texas A&M has not formally announced his hire and salary details are not yet available. Josh Henson was Texas A&M's offensive line coach the past three seasons before leaving to join the USC staff. Henson had a base compensation of $720,000 in 2021, according to a USA Today database of assistant coach salaries.

Addazio’s annual base salary was $1.5 million in 2020, $1.55 million in 2021 and was scheduled to increase to $1.6 million in 2022.

He coached 16 games over two seasons at CSU, leading the Rams to a 1-3 record in a COVID-19-shortened 2020 season and a 3-9 record this year that ended with six straight losses and his ejection before halftime in the final game, a 52-10 loss at home to Nevada.

Addazio was hired by CSU in December 2019, less than two weeks after he was fired after his seventh season leading Boston College.

It was a tumultuous two years for Addazio at CSU. The COVID-19 pandemic hit shortly after his hire, and football operations shut down in the middle of his first spring practice early in 2020.

Complaints from members of the football program regarding alleged violations of COVID-19 protocols and racial insensitivity prompted an investigation into the football program and athletic department later in 2020. That investigation did not substantiate many of the claims, but set in motion a university plan to address anti-retaliation measures and conflict resolution in its athletics program.

An internal CSU investigation said Addazio "likely" made a racially insensitive comment and a statement that indirectly threatened a custodian’s job during an October 2020 altercation.

Addazio was head coach at Boston College and Temple prior to CSU and is 61-67 overall. He's also served as an assistant at Florida (offensive coordinator and offensive line), Indiana (offensive coordinator and offensive line), Notre Dame (tight ends and special teams) and Syracuse (offensive line).

Addazio's son, Louie, served as offensive line coach at CSU and has recently been hired at the same position at Nevada, meaning father and son will hold the same positions in different conferences.

CSU was fourth in the Mountain West in rushing in yards per game 2021 at 164 per game. The Rams were seventh in yards per carry (3.8) and had the sixth-most sacks against in the MW (28).

CSU hired Nevada's Jay Norvell on Dec. 6 to replace Addazio.
