How can Texas Rangers fans buy a piece of World Series history?

Texas Baseball Hall of Fame broadcaster Eric Nadel is teaming up with Heritage Auctions to sell mementos from his storied career with the Texas Rangers.

A native of Brooklyn, only two other broadcasters in baseball (Denny Matthews and Bob Uecker) have been with their teams longer than Nadel who joined the Rangers in 1979.

Proceeds from the Eric Nadel collection will go to the Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas. Fans looking to purchase something from Nadel’s collection can go to Heritage Auctions website.

The collection includes the 1989 Texas Rangers scorebook (including Sammy Sosa’s debut), books from Nadel’s collection signed by him and the headset worn by Nadel during the Rangers World Series championship run among other items.

With the headset also comes the note in which Nadel wrote down his famous World Series-winning call. Nadel wrote the call down in the afternoon before game 5 of the World Series on stationary from the team’s hotel in Arizona.

The items can be bid on until Dec. 17.

Nadel support for the Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas is no surprise as he has been a longtime advocate for mental health.

Nadel himself has experienced struggles with mental health, earlier this year he was forced to miss the beginning of the 2023 MLB season due to a bout with depression.

Nadel would return to calling games for the Rangers on Aug. 4 and in the announcement for his collection with Heritage he talked about his mental health journey.

“You don’t just get cured of depression,” said Nadel, “You’re constantly working to improve your mental health or maintain your mental health and continuing to get therapy and do what you need to do. When you’re someone prone to depression, it’s more likely to return. I’ve learned that the hard way, you need to work harder to ensure you’re in a good place and stay in a good place.”

Nadel also said he appreciated the outpouring of support from Rangers fans.

“So many people reached out and told me that – not just with emails and messages, but people have stopped me and said something similar,” said Nadel, “It’s wonderful. It makes me feel good.”

Nadel is a broadcasting icon who received the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasting excellence by the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in 2014. He has also received the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Texas Sportscaster of the Year Award seven times over his career.

Nadel said he was honored to have been a part of the Rangers for so long.

For the last few weeks, I have felt like I’m living in an alternative universe,” said Nadel, “After 52 years of basically being thought of as losers, the Rangers all of a sudden are perceived in a different light. I am so grateful after all that time to still be here – incredibly grateful and fortunate and blessed to have had this opportunity.”
