Senator Cruz said President Biden should reinstate former President Donald Trump’s policies on the border.

Video Transcript

- After a visit to the southern border last Friday, Texas Senator Ted Cruz continues to put political pressure on the Biden administration all over the influx of migrants. He just visited, in fact, the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, where thousands of migrant teens are currently being held. Our political reporter Jack Fink, live right outside the center with the story of what unfolded today. Jack?

JACK FINK: Well, Doug, Senator Ted Cruz just wrapped up his news conference here, and he said President Joe Biden should reinstate former President Donald Trump's policies at the border. The Senator also said today there are about 2,200 of the teenage boys, mostly 13 to 17, here at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, and that they are sleeping in rows and rows of cots about six feet apart from one another.

Now, multiple reports say by the end of this month, there will likely be about 16,000 unaccompanied minors in US custody, which is a record number. And reports say the border patrol's new estimates are that as many as 26,000 minors could be crossing the border illegally each month by September. Senator Cruz says 10% of the minors here have tested positive for COVID. He also says the conditions in Dallas are better than at the federal facility in Donna, Texas, where he says the minors are being held in cages and packed closely together.

The senator's tour of the center here follows his trip to the border Friday and Saturday with Texas Senator John Cornyn and 17 other senators. Cruz and Republicans have blasted the Biden administration for creating the situation by saying that former President Trump's policies were overturned which kept migrants in Mexico until their asylum cases could be heard.

President Biden, though, denied responsibility Thursday for creating the situation and instead blamed President Trump for dismantling the system that was in place. President Biden said he didn't want the children to starve just south of the US border. Cruz rejected the president's comments.

TED CRUZ: I think President Biden's comments last week blaming Donald Trump for this immigration crisis are ludicrous. They're transparently ludicrous. Last year, we had the lowest rate of illegal immigration in 45 . Years the policies were working.

JACK FINK: Senator Cruz also criticized the Biden administration for not allowing the media into the facility in Donna, Texas and here at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center. I did request of a tour of this facility here but was told that's not possible because of COVID. Doug?

- Hey, Jack, you also confirmed that five of the unaccompanied minors in the convention center ended up getting out. Police, obviously, we've reported, found them nearby at a convenience store. But it brings in the bigger question. What are the feds doing in response to that? They can't be happy about it.

JACK FINK: Well, I did ask HHS about this situation, but I have not heard back from them. Senator Cruz said today that those boys scaled down 70 feet of fence. And DPD told me that they did return those boys to the convention center, but the senator says they were transferred to another facility. Doug?

- Interesting. OK, Jack Fink in Dallas for us today. Thank you.
