Texas State notebook: Baseball starts hot, Kennedy Taylor sets all-time assists record

SAN MARCOS — Texas State baseball lived up to its “Slam Marcos” moniker this past weekend, hitting 13 home runs and scoring 56 runs to set a program record for most runs in a three-game series.

"A lot of runs and good things happened. It is hard to do three games in a row,” Texas State coach Steven Trout said in a release sent out by the school. “Offensively, I challenged them today to come out and have great at-bats. They came in and had great approaches from the very start to the very end.”

The Bobcats (3-0) opened the season at home on Friday, honoring the team’s 2022 Sun Belt championship team before beating Northwestern 12-4. Texas State then posted consecutive 15-run wins to complete the series sweep — 20-5 on Saturday and 24-9 on Sunday. In the series finale, the Bobcats set a program record with eight homers.

Freshman pinch-hitter Chase Mora didn’t play in the first game, but hit three homers in the last two, including two in the finale. First baseman Daylan Pena, left fielder Jose Gonzalez and designated-hitter/catcher August Ramirez hit two homers each, with center fielder Ben McClain, second baseman Ryder Hernandez and pinch-hitter Carson Keithley hitting one each.

Texas State will remain home for a three-game series with Oral Roberts this weekend.

Bobcats softball goes 3-2 in tournament

Softball: Texas State went 3-2 in the I-35 Tourney this weekend, the second of three consecutive tournaments hosted by the Bobcats to open the season.

The Bobcats (6-4) started the tournament with a 9-0 win over Lamar on Thursday before losing to South Dakota State 2-0 on Friday. Texas State then took the next two over South Dakota State — 3-1 on Saturday and 9-1 on Sunday — before losing 4-0 in the final to New Mexico State.

Texas State will host the TXST Classic this weekend, starting on Thursday against UTSA at 2 p.m. and UT-Arlington at 4:30.

Bobcats women's basketball finishes off at home in style

Women’s basketball: Texas State won its home game finale while guard Kennedy Taylor became the Sun Belt's career leader in assists.

After losing 58-54 to James Madison on Thursday, the Bobcats (19-8, 11-5 Sun Belt) beat South Alabama 77-57 on Saturday. Taylor recorded 11 assists in the win, setting the assists record. She leads all active Division I women’s players with 751 career assists.

The Bobcats have two more road games before the conference tournament begins on Feb. 28. Texas State is third in the Sun Belt standings.

Men's basketball bounces back from back-to-back losses

Men’s basketball: After losing 82-75 to Appalachian State last Thursday, the Bobcats (13-16, 6-10) stopped a two-game skid with a 78-75 win over Coastal Carolina on Saturday. The Bobcats, 11th in the conference standings, have two more home games before the conference tournament next week — against South Alabama on Wednesday and Southern Miss on Friday.

Spring football practice begins March 23

Football: Texas State announced spring practice will begin on March 23, with 15 practices before a spring game on April 22. The Bobcats have 78 returning players from last year’s roster, with 25 transfers from the 33 signees for the 2023 recruiting class already enrolled.
