Texas State notebook: Bobcats record back-to-back takedowns of top-10 softball teams

Texas State University on Sept. 16 will host the first of four scheduled U.S. presidential debates. This is the first presidential debate to be hosted in the Lone Star State.

SAN MARCOS — Texas State's softball team secured consecutive wins over top 10-ranked opponents to close out the Bevo Classic at McCombs Field in Austin last weekend, including its first win over Texas since 2018.

The Bobcats (18-7) entered the tournament on a four-game winning streak but dropped the first two games to Wisconsin — 4-2 in extra innings on Friday and 4-3 on Saturday. Wisconsin then lost to Texas twice.

Texas State recovered in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday, beating No. 9 Alabama 3-1. After taking a loss in the first game against Wisconsin, Jessica Mullins got the win over Alabama after throwing all seven innings with eight strikeouts, two hits and one run.

Mullins (11-4), a junior right-hander and the 2022 Sun Belt pitcher of the year, pitched her third complete game of the weekend the following day, needing nine innings to get the 5-4 win over No. 10 Texas on Sunday. An RBI triple in the ninth inning by Piper Randolph broke a 4-4 tie to help secure the win.

It was Mullins’ first win over Texas and the Bobcats' first win at Texas since 2017. The last time Texas State beat Texas was a 2-1 decision in San Marcos on April 11, 2018.

Texas State was scheduled to host Texas Tech for a doubleheader Tuesday before opening conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Troy.

Baseball: The Bobcats followed up back-to-back losses with a three-game sweep of North Dakota State last weekend.

Texas State (10-5) started the week with an 11-2 loss at home against UTSA on Tuesday. Down 7-2 in the first game of the series against North Dakota State on Friday, the Bobcats came charging back with six runs in the eighth to take the first game 8-7.

The Bobcats took another one-run win the next day with a 19-18 victory in a game that had 14 total home runs, seven on each side. Chase Mora, a freshman second baseman, set a program record for Texas State with four homers in the game. He has seven homers through his first 15 collegiate games.

Texas State completed the sweep Sunday with a 5-1 win. The Bobcats were scheduled to host TCU on Tuesday before opening conference play this weekend, hosting Southern Miss in a three-game series.

Women’s basketball: As one of 32 automatic qualifiers for the WNIT, Texas State (23-9) will face Stephen F. Austin (26-6) in the first round on Wednesday. Former rivals in the Southland Conference, the two programs have faced each other 67 times but not since 2014. The Bobcats last played in the WNIT in 2018, losing in the first round. It will be the third time the program has been to the WNIT, advancing to the second round in 2008.
