Texas State notebook: Bobcats' Steven Trout agrees to five-year coaching extension

Texas State University on Sept. 16 will host the first of four scheduled U.S. presidential debates. This is the first presidential debate to be hosted in the Lone Star State.

SAN MARCOS — Texas State baseball coach Steven Trout, the reigning Sun Belt coach of the year, has agreed to a five-year contract extension through 2027. His initial contract was going to expire June 30.

"I couldn't be more excited to continue to be the head coach for Texas State baseball,” Trout said in a statement. “After the record breaking season, I am excited to carry this momentum into the seasons to come."

Trout earned conference coach of the year honors after leading the Bobcats to an improvement of 26 wins, going from 21-36 last year to 47-14 and a regular-season Sun Belt championship. Texas State went 26-4 in conference play, including a 15-0 mark on the road.

The Bobcats fell in the Sun Belt Tournament semifinals but still earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 11 years, as an at-large team. They won their first two games at the Stanford Regional, including a victory over the Cardinal, the No. 2 overall NCAA seed. But Stanford came back to take consecutive games and win the regional.

For the first time in program history, Texas State recorded wins over the country's No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the same season; the Bobcats beat then-No. 1 Texas on March 9.

Football: Texas State's 2022 signing class grew to 27 players with the recent additions of 10 FBS transfers, two FCS transfers, a junior college transfer and a high school graduate. The newcomers include Texas Tech defensive lineman Nelson Mbanasor, a Hendrickson product who played in 31 career games for the Red Raiders.

Mbanasor, who has one year of eligibility left, was one of five defensive signees announced this week, along with Louisiana Tech’s Levi and Ben Bell, Texas’ Myron Warren and Memphis’ Kajuan Robinson. Ben Bell, the youngest of the two brothers from Cedar Park, is listed as an outside linebacker. The others are linemen.

The Bobcats also announced four new receivers: Arizona's Jaden Mitchell, Rutgers' Ahmirr Robinson, Montana State's Charles Brown and Lake Travis High School's Isaac Norris.

Texas State also added two offensive linemen, Kansas transfer Larson Workman and Campbell transfer Ian Hover; two running backs, UCF's Damarius Good and Arkansas State's Lincoln Pare; and one tight end, Cisco College's Titus Lyons.
