Texas State notebook: More transfer infusions complete Bobcats' 2022 signing class

SAN MARCOS — This spring, Texas State football coach Jake Spavital said he expected the Bobcats' 2022 signing class to have about 30 players, even though it had fewer than half that total at the time.

Five more transfers jumped to Texas State this week, and Spavital has surpassed his spring prediction. Texas State's 2022 class now has 32 players, 29 of whom are transfers, including graduate and junior college transfers.

Baylor quarterback CJ Rogers, Tulsa tight end James Palmer, SMU linebacker Brian Holloway, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M offensive lineman Jackson Schultze and Coahoma Community College cornerback Javen Ware signed this week to complete the 2022 class. All are eligible to play this season. The Bobcats signed 19 players this summer after netting only 13 via the two national signing days in December and February.

Texas State gained more than it lost in the transfer portal this offseason with 11 leaving, including quarterback Brady McBride (Appalachian State) and safety Zion Childress (Kentucky). The Bobcats have 84 scholarship players on the roster, one below the FBS limit of 85 and the most since moving to the FBS in 2012.

Rogers is the Bobcats' third quarterback transfer this offseason, along with Arkansas State's Layne Hatcher and Syracuse's Dillion Markiewicz. He has four years left to play after not taking a snap as a freshman last year for Baylor. As a high school senior, he led Argyle to an undefeated state championship and was named the Class 4A player of the year by The Dallas Morning News.

Palmer is the third tight end transfer signed in this class, along with Coastal Carolina's DJ Johnson and Cisco College's Titus Lyons. He started 10 games in 25 appearances for Tulsa, with eight catches for 117 yards and a touchdown. He has two seasons left.

Holloway started out at Kilgore College before transferring to SMU in 2019. In three seasons with the Mustangs, he made 26 appearances with no starts, registering 31 tackles. In one season at Kilgore in 2018, he made 45 tackles in 12 games.

Schultze is the seventh junior college offensive lineman the Bobcats have signed. Ware is the fourth defensive back in the class.

Texas State also has received its first pledge for the 2023 class from Gladewater defensive back Kollin Lewis. He holds other offers from Arkansas State, UTSA, Louisiana Tech and Rice.

MLB draft: Two Texas State players were taken in this week's major league baseball draft — shortstop Dalton Shuffield in the 10th round, 294th overall, by the Minnesota Twins and closer Triston Stivors in the 16th round, 491st overall, by the Chicago White Sox. Shuffield is the reigning Sun Belt player of the year; Stivors led the nation in saves this past season.
