Texas Tech blanks Wichita State on road

WICHITA, Kan. — Franco Ribero, Lorenzo Esquici and Sebastian Abboud won their singles matches in straight sets, helping Texas Tech beat Wichita State 4-0 Monday in non-conference tennis action.

Tech took the best-of-three doubles point with victories by the teams of Ribero-Piotr Pawlak and Abboud-Tyler Stewart.

Tech (3-4), coming off a 4-2 loss Sunday at Tulsa, earned a split on a two-match road trip. Wichita State (4-5) lost for the fourth time in six matches.

On Sunday, Tech hosts the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley (3-5) at 10 a.m. and Abilene Christian University (4-2) at 3 p.m.

LCU men's golf

LAREDO — Braxton Floyd shot 2-over 74 and Tiaan de Jager carded 3-over 75, helping Lubbock Christian University into fourth place out of seven teams after Monday's first round of the Jack Brown Memorial tournament at Laredo Country Club.

Floyd is tied for eighth individually and de Jager is tied for 10th. Right behind them is Hayden Bowman, who shot a 76. Garrett Auger had LCU's last counting score with an 83, and Jackson Comer shot 88.

UT Tyler leads the tournament at 7-over, followed by St. Mary's at 11-over, the University of Houston-Victoria at 13-over and LCU at 20-over.

The final round starts at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

PLAINVIEW — Wayland Baptist first baseman Arturo Disla on Monday was named the Sooner Athletic Conference player of the week.

In a four-game series sweep of New Mexico Highlands from Thursday through Saturday, Disla went 9 for 13 with three home runs and 14 runs batted in. He also had four doubles, three walks and six runs scored.

Disla, a 6-foot-1, 240-pound sophomore from the Dominican Republic, has 16 RBI for the season, which is second in the NAIA.

Wayland (6-2) is scheduled for four games Thursday through Saturday at the Cajun Collision in Sterlington, Louisiana. The Pioneers face No. 12 MidAmerica Nazarene (1-2) at 6 p.m. Thursday, Benedictine (Kan.) (0-0) at 11 a.m. Friday, Clarke (1-2) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Tabor (5-0) at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Tech track & field

The Texas Tech men are No. 3 and the Tech women are No. 15 in this week's ranking by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The men are down one spot from last week's rating, and the women are two positions lower.

The top five on the men's side are Arkansas, Washington, Tech, Texas and Nebraska. The top five women's teams are Texas, Arkansas, Florida, North Carolina State and Washington.

Tech hosts the Jarvis Scott Open at 3 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday at the Sports Performance Center.
