Texas Tech favorite Varsity Books announces closure due to COVID, supply chain issues

After 88 years of supporting Texas Tech University students, staff and fans, one of the oldest bookstores in Lubbock will close its doors.

Since 1934, Varsity Bookstore, 1305 University Ave., has offered some of the best deals on college gear and textbooks. On Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022, the store announced it would close its doors by the end of the year.

"There is no exact date, but we will close no later that December 31, 2022," the store stated through a social media message.

The announcement surprised fans on social media, but the store explained in a message that e-books and supply chain issues led to the decision.

"After COVID, buying habits changed rapidly," the store stated. "Publishers are pushing E-books and direct downloads. Supply chain has been a huge issue in getting products and material in time. We appreciate all of our loyal customers since Varsity Bookstore first opened in 1934."

As part of the announcement, Varsity added that there would be closing sales and changes. Sales include:

40% off: Clothing, caps, hats, accessories, gifts and decor, decals, auto accessories, art supplies, and school and office items.

25% off: Graduation regalia, including cap, gown, tassel, stole and honor cords.

10% off: In-stock diploma frames.

All sales are final and cannot be combined with other coupons or discounts. Textbooks, e-books, course codes, course materials, kits and already discounted art supplies are excluded.

The store also will no longer buy back textbooks, sell e-books or rent course materials.
