Texas Tech men's basketball ranked 25th in preseason AP poll

The Texas Tech men's basketball team is ranked No. 25 in The Associated Press' preseason poll, which was released on Monday.

The Red Raiders compiled an overall record of 27-10, including an 18-0 mark in United Supermarkets Arena, in 2021-22. Tech lost to eventual national champion Kansas in the championship game of the Big 12 Tournament and lost to Duke in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Just three players from last year's team will suit up for Texas Tech this season. The trio is highlighted by forward Kevin Obanor, who started all 37 games and recorded double-doubles in each of Tech's three NCAA Tournament games.

Fellow Big 12 teams Kansas and Baylor were tied for fifth in the preseason AP poll, which was headlined by No. 1 North Carolina. Texas came in 12th and TCU 14th, giving the conference five representatives.

The Red Raiders were tied for fifth in the preseason Big 12 conference poll. Tech is scheduled to open the season on Nov. 7 by hosting Northwestern State at 8 p.m. in the USA.

Big 12 media days are slated for this week in Kansas City.

HOCKLEY — Matthew Comegys and Ludvig Aberg rolled to lopsided victories, helping No. 1 seed Texas Tech beat No. 8 seed TCU 4-0-2 in Monday's first round of the Big 12 match-play championship.

Comegys won his match 5 & 4, and Aberg beat his opponent 6 & 4. Tech's Jack Wall and Tyran Snyders each edged their opponents 1-up, and Baard Skogen and Calum Scott halved their matches.

Tech advanced to an afternoon second-round match against No. 9 seed Iowa State.

The tournament is being conducted at The Clubs at Houston Oaks, the same site where Texas beat Tech in the championship match last year.

In Monday's other first-round matches, No. 5 seed Kansas State downed No. 4 seed Texas 4-2, No. 2 seed Oklahoma beat No. 7 seed Kansas 5-0-1, and No. 3 seed Oklahoma State defeated No. 6 seed Baylor 5-1.

Tech is in a pool Texas, Kansas State, TCU and Iowa State. The other pool has Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Kansas and No. 10 seed West Virginia.

Tech faces Kansas State at 8 a.m. Tuesday and has the afternoon off, then tangles with Texas on Wednesday morning.

Following the conclusion of Wednesday's morning session, the two pool winners will play for the championship. Each of the other teams will play the opponent that finished in the same position in the other pool.

The Oct. 29 game with Baylor visiting Texas Tech is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff and will air on ESPN2.

In addition to the Big 12 football game, Oct. 29 will also feature the induction of Patrick Mahomes into the Texas Tech football Ring of Honor and TTU Athletics Hall of Fame.

Mahomes will be the eighth member of the Ring of Honor, joining Donny Anderson, E.J. Holub, Dave Parks, Gabe Rivera, Zach Thomas, Michael Crabtree and Elmer Tarbox.

Other 2022 inductees into the Hall of Fame include Kevin Curtis (football), Oscar Floren (men's golf), Patience Knight (track and field), Gene Knolle (men's basketball), Chris Martin (volleyball), Matt Miller (baseball), Norman Reuther (men's basketball) and Tommy McVay (director of football operations).
