Texas Tech oncologist completes new cancer-treatment procedure

A Texas Tech oncologist recently completed a new two-step procedure to treat certain cancers, for the first time in West Texas.

Dr. Tyler Mouw, a Tech Physicians surgical oncologist who offers services in the UMC Health System, completed the first Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy Surgery (HIPEC) in West Texas. This procedure could help patients with cancer in their gastrointestinal tract that has spread between organs in the abdomen. This procedure has also treated ovarian cancer, peritoneal mesothelioma and gastric cancer, and could be used for colorectal and appendiceal cancer.

“This is exciting because this offers an effective treatment for patients with low-grade appendiceal tumors and also offers an additional line of therapy for patients who have exhausted other treatment options,” Mouw said. “This can add to the disease-free lifespan of some patients.”
