Despite missing the last two games due to a foot injury suffered back on Nov. 12, Texas Tech’s Tyree Wilson made enough of an impact on the field to be recognized nationally.

On Monday, the 6-foot-6, 275-pound edge rusher was named a second team All American by the Associated Press. To go along with that good news, the Red Raiders also learned defensive back Malik Dunlap would return for his final season of eligibility — through a COVID-bonus year.

“Let’s run it back one more year,” Dunlap wrote in a Tweeted on Monday afternoon, which included the ”Not Leaving” clip from the ‘Wolf of Wall Street.’

Dunlap, a 6-3, 218-pound senior from Charlotte (N.C.) Harding University, was ranked second in the Big 12 with 11 pass breakups. He also had 29 tackles and an interception.

On Nov. 20, Wilson declared for the NFL draft and was set to prepare for workouts after he had a broken foot surgically repaired. After ending the season with 61 tackles, including 14 tackles for loss and seven sacks, Wilson leaving early for the draft was widely expected with several NFL draft analysts projecting him as a first-round pick.

"I fully intended to finish this season with my brothers on the field," Wilson, the first-team All Big 12 selection, wrote in a Tweet on Nov. 20, "but unfortunately I broke a bone in my foot and despite my best efforts to work through it, multiple doctors have advised me to get it fixed immediately. Although I have to stay off my foot for the next couple of months, I will be 100% healthy and prepared for the NFL Draft workouts where I plan to continue to prove that I'm the best defensive player in this upcoming draft."

Last Friday, Wilson and safety Marquis Waters were named first-team all-Americans by the Football Writers Association of America. Wilson and Waters were also first-team honorees on The Associated Press All-Big 12 team — the only Tech players to make The AP All-Big 12 team — which was chosen by a voting panel of 18 sportswriters and sportscasters who regularly cover the conference.

The FWAA is one of five all-America teams recognized and used by the NCAA in determining players designated as unanimous or consensus all-Americans. The other four recognized teams are those of the Walter Camp Football Foundation, the American Football Coaches Association, The Associated Press and The Sporting News.

Prior to Wilson, the last Texas Tech player to be named a first-team all-American by one of the five recognized organizations was wide receiver Antoine Wesley in 2018 by the FWAA.
