Texas Tech's Maddie Correa named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week

After helping the Red Raiders to an unblemished 4-0 record last week with a valiant defensive effort, sophomore libero Maddie Correa was named the Big 12 Conference's Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Correa earned her first Big 12 honor after recording double-digit digs in all four matches, which helped Texas Tech defeat Tarleton State, College of Charleston, Charlotte and Georgia.

In doing so, the Red Raiders started the season 6-0 for the first time since 2014 and 15th time overall in program history.

Against Tarleton, Correa collected a career-high 19 digs (6.33 digs per set) in the sweep over the Texans. After heading to Athens, Ga., for the Bulldog Classic, Correa kept up her defense with 14 digs over Charleston (4.67 d/s), while also recording two aces and six assists.

Helping lead the team to its next victory over Charlotte, Correa posted 15 digs (3.75 d/s), two aces and three assists in the match.

In the final match of the Bulldog Classic, the Red Raiders faced SEC-foe and host-team Georgia, where they pulled out a gritty, 3-1 victory over the Bulldogs. In the match, Correa led the charge with 18 total digs (4.50 d/s), four assists and one ace.

Overall, she tallied 66 digs (4.71 d/s), 18 assists and five aces. In addition, Correa has put together double-digit dig efforts in every single match of the season so far, making her the only Red Raider to do so.

Texas Tech heads to Houston for the Adidas Invitational hosted by Rice University, which is receiving votes in the latest AVCA poll. The Red Raiders are set to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Brown and Rice on Sept. 9-11.

Lady Raiders basketball

Texas Tech opens its 2022-23 campaign with an open exhibition against D-II foe Midwestern State (Nov. 1) at United Supermarkets Arena, before the home opener arrives on Nov. 7 (Texas A&M Corpus Christi).

Following the home opener against the Islanders, the Lady Raiders turn their attention to the Preseason WNIT Tournament, beginning on Nov. 15 against 2022 NCAA Tournament participant Jackson State.

Also a NCAA Tournament in 2022, Colorado heads to United Supermarkets Arena on Nov. 16 for the second game of the tournament, before the third and final game of the Preseason WNIT on Nov. 20 at Louisiana.

Thanksgiving week brings the Lady Raiders to Las Vegas, as Tech will compete in the Las Vegas Invitational hosted by the iconic Mirage Hotel.

The weekend begins the day after Thanksgiving (Nov. 25) with a 1 p.m. (CT) matchup against 2022 Postseason WNIT Semifinalist Middle Tennessee, and closes with a matchup against NCAA Tournament participant Mercer at 10 p.m. (CT) on Nov. 26.

Tech will be busy in the month of December, as the first of seven home matchups kicks off, when Alabama State comes to town on December 1. In-state foe Incarnate Word visits on Dec. 4 before the annual education day matchup against Sam Houston State on Dec. 6.

After a break for finals week, the Lady Raiders return to action on Dec. 14 against Oral Roberts, and Cowgirls of McNeese State on Dec. 19. UC Riverside treks to Lubbock on Dec. 22 before the non-conference finale against Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 27.

Texas Tech men's soccer

The No. 6 Red Raiders head to Saint Simons Island for the season opening Frederica Cup hosted by Vanderbilt University, beginning Wednesday. Tech's number six ranking is the second highest in school history behind the 2019-20 team that climbed as high as No. 3 in the country. The Red Raiders tee off for the opening round at 6:30 a.m., while Wednesday's second round will follow at 12:30 p.m. with the third and final round scheduled for Thursday morning.This week's loaded eight-team field includes three top-10 programs (Vanderbilt, Tech and Oklahoma) and five programs that were ranked inside the Golfweek Preseason rankings that dropped Monday.

LCU men's soccer

Following its first shutout win of the season, the Chaps are looking to keep the positive momentum going when they take on Colo. Colorado Springs for the first time since 2019 at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

LCU is coming off a 4-0 win over SD Mines in Denver, Colo.

With two goals and an assist, Tariq Bakkali finished the match with five points — new career high.

The Chaps will play their second of four matches in the state of Colorado.
