Text messages mistakenly sent to officer lead to seizure of 14 pounds of marijuana, arrest

RICHMOND, Ind. — Text messages apparently sent to an unintended recipient have resulted in the seizure of more than 14 pounds of marijuana and a Richmond man's arrest.

According to Richmond police, on Sunday a city police officer received text messages "from a subject... she knew from a previous police encounter."

According to a news release, it quickly became apparent those messages were not intended for the police officer.

Richmond police said text messages mistakenly sent to an officer led to a local man's arrest and the seizure of more than 14 pounds of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, a gun and cash.

They were attached to videos "of large quantities of marijuana along with prices to purchase in different quantities."

On Monday, Richmond officers served a search warrant at a home in the 600 block of South E Street. According to the release, they seized more than 14 pounds of marijuana, 636 grams of THC wax valued at more than $7,000, several bags of gummies, a 9mm handgun and $522 in cash.

Logan Michael Jarrett, 26, was arrested on a preliminary count of dealing in marijuana, a Level 5 felony carrying up to six years in prison. He remained in the Wayne County jail on Tuesday under a $7,500 bond.

"Please let this be a reminder to always double check who you are sending that text message to before hitting the send button," Tuesday's release, issued by the Richmond Police Department, concluded.

Jarrett's arrest came only a few days after recreational use of marijuana became legal in nearby Ohio. However, the legal distribution of cannabis products in that state must be conducted under state guidelines.

Intimidation: A Richmond man faces a pair of felony charges over threats allegedly aimed at his spouse.

Dennis Jon Smith, 39, is charged in Wayne Superior Court 2 with two counts of intimidation, one a Level 5 felony carrying up to six years in prison and the other a Level 6 felony with a maximum 30-month sentence.

Richmond police were sent to Smith's South L Street home early Saturday after receiving a report of a domestic disturbance.

According to an affidavit, Smith told his wife he would kill her if police were called to their home.

Witnesses said the Richmond man was brandishing a knife when some of the threats were made, also while in the presence of five children.

Smith reportedly told officers he and his wife had been arguing, but "there was nothing physical and that he did not make any threats."

Police were shown a video, apparently made with a cellphone, that allegedly showed the Richmond man while making some of the threatening comments.

Smith reportedly told the officer who arrested him that he shouldn't "work too hard on this (arrest) report because the judge is not going to do anything with it."

Court records reflect no prior felony charges against Smith, who continued to be held in the Wayne County jail on Tuesday under a $40,000 bond.
