TGN Athlete of the Week: Ella Mohamed

Dec. 27—For the second time this season, Northridge girls basketball junior Ella Mohamed has been named The Goshen News Athlete of the Week; this time for the period of Dec. 18 — 24.

Winning 36% of the vote, Mohamed was nominated for the end of Northridge's lone game last week.

In the 51-49 win at Penn, Northridge had to climb back from a fourth-quarter deficit and Mohamed's two made 3-point attempts in the final frame helped the Raiders seal the comeback on the road against a tough Kingsmen team. She finished the game with 13 points, three rebounds and one assist.

The win also pushed Northridge to winners of 12-straight contests and a 13-1 overall record this season. Currently, the team is ranked No. 9 in the IBCA one-class poll. There is no doubt that Mohamed's big buckets late helped continue the climb.

Runner-up: Joselyn Edwards

Finishing second in the voting was NorthWood girls basketball star Joselyn Edwards who gathered 28% of the vote.

Totaling 31 points for the Panthers in critical wins over Fairfield and South Bend Adams, Edwards pushed her team forward, spacing out eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.

NorthWood, now 12-2 on the season, is on an eight-game win streak with the win over the Falcons and Eagles.

Also nominated: Carson Smith

Fairfield boys basketball picked up a pair of wins the past week with Carson Smith leading the charge in both efforts.

First, Smith scored 14 points in the win over Fort Wayne Northrop at the Parkview Sports Medicine Holiday Shootout. He came back the next day to score a similar 14 points to award Fairfield a statement win over a top-ranked and previously undefeated Fort Wayne North Side team. The win over the Legends was well-earned, and Smith's efforts made last week's 2-0 record all possible.

Smith captured 20% of the vote.

Also nominated: Mariah StoltzfusRounding out the fan poll was Bethany Christian girls basketball senior Mariah Stoltzfus.

Stoltzfus was relied upon in the 46-44 road win over Argos, scoring 19 points and adding four steals, four rebounds and three assists. Her showing was critical to keeping Bethany in the win column, pushing the Bruins to 11-1 this season.

Stoltzfus received 16% of the vote.
