Thai banquet served for monkeys to boost tourism

STORY: Climbing over organisers and tourists, thousands of macaques clamoured to snatch their favourite treats of durians, mangoes, banana, watermelon, mangosteen, oranges and guava worth about $8,500.

The festival, led by 83-year-old local businessman Yongyuth Kitwattananusorn, is now in its 35th year to help boost tourism in the province, which is home to the 10th-century Phra Prang Sam Yod temple.

Whilst efforts are made by the government to attract tourists, local workers also expressed worries about the increasing number of the monkeys that affect their lives despite government efforts to sterilize monkeys to control the population since 2018.
