Thanksgiving 2023: What stores are open and closed in Greater Cincinnati this year?

Thanksgiving, the holiday known for gathering families, friends and loved ones for a festive turkey feast, is just days away.

Although the first Thanksgiving celebration occurred in 1621, it didn't become a federal holiday until President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the resolution on Dec. 26, 1941.

Thanksgiving Day is now one of 10 federal holidays recognized by the U.S. government, meaning there will likely be a few changes to the regular operating hours of businesses and government services across the country, including Greater Cincinnati.

From grocery stores to banks and schools, here's a look at what's open and closed for Thanksgiving this year.

What grocery stores are open on Thanksgiving Day 2023?

Aldi: Closed Thanksgiving Day.

Costco: Closed Thanksgiving Day.

CVS: Most CVS stores will be open regular hours, however, some stores may be closed or have limited hours, the company told USA Today.

Dollar General: The company has not announced a change to its regular operating hours. Stores are typically open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. but check with your local store for more information.

Family Dollar: The company has not announced a change to its regular operating hours. Hours may vary by location, but check with your local store for more information.

Fresh Thyme Market: Stores open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Fresh Market: Stores open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., per Delish.

Jungle Jim's: Stores open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Kroger: All Kroger stores will be open, but most stores will close in the early evening. Make sure to check with your local store for more specific information about holiday hours.

Meijer: Stores open 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sam's Club: Closed Thanksgiving Day.

Target: Closed Thanksgiving Day.

Trader Joe's: The company has not confirmed this year's hours, but locations were closed on Thanksgiving last year.

Walmart: Closed Thanksgiving Day.

Whole Foods: According to the company, many stores are open with modified hours on Thanksgiving. Greater Cincinnati Whole Foods locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thanksgiving.

Will banks be open on Thanksgiving Day 2023?

Banks will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 23, including Chase Bank, Fifth Third Bank, Federal Reserve Banks, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and TD Banks.

Will mail be delivered on Thanksgiving Day 2023?

The U.S. Postal Service will not deliver mail or packages on Thanksgiving Day, but mail delivery will resume Friday, Nov. 24. UPS stores, as well as pick-up and delivery services, will be closed on Thanksgiving. All FedEx shipping services will also be closed.

Will trash be picked up on Thanksgiving Day 2023?

If your regular trash collection day from the city of Cincinnati falls on Thanksgiving Day, trash will be collected the following day. Rumpke will not have any delays in trash collection, according to its holiday schedule, with the exception of Spring Valley.

Spring Valley residents normally scheduled for service on Thursday will be serviced on Friday.

Will Cincinnati-area schools be open on Thanksgiving Day 2023?

Schools in the area, including Cincinnati Public Schools, Covington Independent Schools, Newport Independent Schools, Kenton County Schools, Boone County Schools and Campbell County Schools, will be closed Thursday.

What else will be closed on Thanksgiving Day 2023?

Since Thanksgiving Day is a federal holiday, all non-essential federal government offices will be closed. Hamilton County offices and services, Campbell County, Kenton County and Boone County offices will also be closed on Thursday.

Additionally, Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library branches will be closed on Thanksgiving. The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq will also be closed on Thanksgiving.
