Choosing a baby name can be one of the trickiest decisions for parents-to-be to make. After all, it’s not something you can change easily like the colour of the nursery. Whether you go for a celebrity inspired name, a hipster name or something so ‘unique’ no one’s ever heard of it, it pays to choose wisely or your baby could end up appearing on the ‘bogan’ names list. Er, what?

Back in 2014, a list of the best ‘bogan’ names was compiled by Kidspot in Australia. The list went viral sparking heated internet debates for months. Now the 2016 edition has been released with just 20 names making the not-so-flattering list. Still confused about what the hell ‘bogan’ is? Allow us to explain.

Urban Dictionary describes the term bogan as, “A fascinating beast. The majority of the species are hideously repugnant and unintelligent, and yet they manage to breed in ever-increasing numbers and populate an area known as the outer west.”

As you can imagine, people who chose these names for their children weren’t particularly thrilled at the suggestion that they had chosen a name for their gurgling, bundle of joy that made them ‘repugnant’ or ‘unintelligent’.

But explaining that the list should actually be taken in the light-hearted spirited it was meant, Sabrina Rogers-Anderson who compiled the list wrote on Kidspot. “I believe we all have a bit of bogan in us that we should embrace and celebrate. In that spirit, I present to you the 2016 edition of my best bogan baby names list.’

Before you start scratching some of your names off the maybe list, here’s the big reveal of which moniker’s made this year’s cut.

GIRL NAMES:

Many of the names on the list are adaptations of more common names ie ‘Izaak’, more commonly spelt Isaac and 'Jathon’, a 'bogan variation of Jason.' Then there was 'Khodii’, instead of 'boring old Cody’, 'McKyla’ as an alternative to 'Michaela’ and, 'Kyly’ as a unique spelling for Kylie. Sure the Aussie pop princess will be thrilled.

And possibly in another celebrity nod to JayZ, J’Zayden made the list.

'J’zayden puts all those wannabe bogans to shame. You forgot the apostrophe, you fools! J’zayden’s mum just left you eating her boganic dust,’ Sabrina Joked.

Some of the other names making the list were actual words like ‘Beautiful’ and ‘Ever’. And the deliberately misspelt ‘Truely’. And then there were names that combined two or more words, like ‘Younique’

'I have to give props to Younique’s parents,’ Sabrina said, 'Younique’s mum and dad didn’t mess around – they took the words YOU ARE UNIQUE, chewed them up and spat them out onto their kid.'

So if you’re currently in the midst of choosing a baby name, might be worth checking the list above before you settle on a decision, unless of course you’re happy to have a baby bodan. Hang on, that does have a certain ring to it!
