Finding the perfect shade of foundation is already complicated enough without factoring in the multitude of formulas they’re available in and what works best for our skin type.

The wrong type of foundation can mean dry, flaky patches of colour or an oily pore-clogging mess, or fine powder settling into creases and accentuating fine lines.

So we’ve taken the guesswork out for you and broken down the best foundations for every skin type.

If you have dry or dehydrated skin

Moisture is key so look for a foundation that is described as moisturizing, hydrating, luminous, glowing or radiant. These will hydrate and liven up your skin, leaving it looking a lot healthier and less dull. A tinted moisturizer is a fool-proof option for evening out skin tone without drying it out. Skin can also become dryer and dehydrated in the colder months, so it may be worth considering switching your typical lighter and drier foundations to a more creamy and hydrating formula in winter.

If you have oily skin

Having your foundation melt off your face after a stroll under the sun or a light workout isn’t pretty. Stop your foundation from wearing off by picking one with an oil-free formula and matte finish. This will result in a natural looking base with good staying power. Powder foundations work best for an oily skin tone as it will help absorb excess oil. Simply buff on with a powder brush for an easy and flawless finish.

If you have sensitive skin

Anything can set off a reaction if you have sensitive skin so testing a new foundation can be tricky. Mineral foundations are a great option as they contain fewer chemicals, less harsh ingredients and are pretty much always unscented. The coverage is easy to build and the finish is natural soft skin.

If you have aging skin

The first signs of aging tend to show through your skin. Adding a drop of foundation to your day cream can really make a world of difference at blurring redness, broken veins and uneven skin tone. Opt for a medium coverage foundation with a moisturizing and creamier formula so it doesn’t settle into fine lines. This will create smoother looking skin that will appear brighter and more youthful.

If you have combination skin

If you have a combination skin type, your best bet would be a cream or liquid foundation. The majority of these will neither be too drying nor too oily for your skin and they tend to be around a medium coverage. A velvety finish will help to combat oily areas without emphasizing dry patches.
