The One Show host reveals Angelina Jolie interview caused live-TV breakup

Alex Jones of The One Show has claimed that an interview with Angelina Jolie caused the end of her relationship with Steve Jones over 20 years ago.

The two TV presenters began dating all the way back in 1999, with the Welsh native working as an entertainment correspondent for Channel 4 breakfast programme RI:SE at the time, but one high-profile fib saw the whole romance come crashing down.

In a forthcoming episode of Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett's podcast Dish, Alex recalls how ex-boyfriend Steve told her bosses that she was too sick to speak with the Maleficent actress when in reality she'd just nipped out for some shopping.

"Normally, they would call in the morning and ask to come and do an interview or a junket," she says, according to MailOnline.

“I was staying in his flat at the time when I was working in London and he picked up the landline and said 'Al's not here – she's not feeling well; she's had to go back to Cardiff.' I was in Topshop."

Alex added: "So he did the interview."

Although the mum-of-three has previously referenced this tale of betrayal, the identity of her scheming partner had been kept on the down-low until now.

She told Angela Scanlon's Thanks A Million podcast in 2021: "I got back to the flat and was like, 'where is he?' Hours went past, nobody answering their phones and in the end thought, 'Right I'm going to drive back to Cardiff, because I don't know where you are, you've probably gone to the pub.'

"And then the production company called, and they were like, 'We've got bit of a situation. Tomorrow morning, your boyfriend is going to the premiere with Angelina Jolie and it would be really funny if you came on the line, live on the show and surprised him and said that you know exactly what he's been up to.'"

Alex agreed to it and they "split up live on telly".
