The Real Reason We All Kiss With Our Eyes Shut

Why people kiss with their eyes closed is one of life’s unanswered questions. We all do it, but why?

When you don’t keep your eyes shut during a good snogging session, it makes you feel weird and like you’re violating the natural order. But it turns out we don’t close our eyes because we would feel awkward if we didn’t. Instead, there’s some science to it all.

According to experts, we keep our eyes closed because our brains can’t cope with playing tonsil hockey and gazing into someone’s eyes at the same time. It’s like trying to pat your head while rubbing your stomach at the same time – doing the two actions at the same time completely confuses our brains.

Psychologists at Royal Holloway University of London released the information, revealing that completing a visual task limits a person’s ability to deal with touch – which is pretty crucial when trying to swirl your tongue around someone’s mouth.

“It was already known that increasing the demands of a visual task could reduce noticing of visual and auditory stimuli,” says Dr Sandra Murphy. “Our research extends this finding to the sense of touch. This is particularly important given the growing use of tactile information in warning systems.

“For example, some cars now provide tactile alerts when they begin drifting across lanes – our research suggests that drivers will be less likely to notice these alerts when engaging in demanding visual tasks such as searching for directions at a busy junction.”
