What’s your bed time attire of choice? PJs, nothing at all, nightie (*shudders*), battered old T-shirt and pants? We all have our sartorial sleep faves, but according to science there’s a totally legit reason we should be going commando in the sack.

According to Gynaecologist Dr Alyssa Dweck, who wrote V for Vagina, sleeping in our smalls can cause bacteria to collect, particularly if you’re a bit of a night time sweaty Betty.

Speaking to Shape, Dr Dweck explained “If [the area] is constantly covered, especially by a fabric that’s not moisture-wicking or absorbent, moisture collects. That’s a perfect breeding ground for bacteria or yeast.”

Which means keeping it covered down-there at all times, makes you more prone to yeast infections like thrush and other unpleasantries. Eww.

But don’t drop your pants just yet PJ-lovers, because while Dr Dweck does recommend going nude at night to let your bits breathe, she has an alternative suggestion for anyone who isn’t entirely comfortable sleeping sans smalls.

“If there’s ever a time to break out the granny panties, this would be the time,” she says, suggesting loose-fitting cotton underwear or boxers because they’re more breathable and, erm, moisture is less likely to collect.

And being a nudey at night is good for other reasons too: according to science bods in the know sleeping naked helps regulate your body temperature. If you’re too hot when you sleep your cortisol levels tend to stay high even once you’re up which can lead to anxiety and weight gain.

Proof, if ever we needed it, its time to ditch the knicks.
