An unsolved mystery and being sacrificed alive: The spookiest NPC stories in Genshin Impact

If you read the lore and poke around the NPCs, you'll find some creepy tales in Teyvat

The main storyline of Genshin Impact may be breathtakingly exhilarating, with every twist and turn imaginable to boot, but the world-building and lore of the overworld is also as complicated and sometimes as shocking.

But what about scary mysteries?

With version 3.3's Akitsu Kimodameshi event shining a light to the strange and the horrifying, we couldn't help but look for more creepy stories within the game, too!

Here are some NPCs whose stories had us shaking:

The first time you find yourself at Dawn Winery, a pair of maids named Moco and Hillie are whispering to themselves near the doors of Master Diluc’s grand mansion. If you listen close enough (i.e interact), you’ll find out that they’re talking about a certain guest who inexplicably disappeared the night prior.

Hillie says that the guest must have disappeared in the middle of the night, leaving not a trace of their existence in the rooms of Dawn Winery, which have been cleaned and put into order.

Curious about this, she asked Adelinde, the head maid, about this guest and their whereabouts, but she pre-emptively ignored her while watering the flower bed, noting that when the flowers bloom, they will be gorgeous.

Hillie finds this super creepy.

You might be curious now. At night time, when the maids are inside the mansion, they’ll talk a bit more about the curious happenings within the winery. Interacting with them again will give you another tidbit about this mysterious head maid.

For all maids at the winery, they are handed a set of keys to all of the rooms, likely for them to easily access and to keep clean.

However, there is a secret room in the mansion whose key is only in the hands of Adelinde.

Moco found this room as she was waxing the floors, and curious of a maid she is, decided to snoop around.

She ends up hearing an ominous “Thud…thud…thud…” as she was trying to listen from the secret door, and was scared out of her wits when Adelinde suddenly came upon her with a smile on her face, telling her to go back to her room. Moco realises that those thudding sounds were Adelinde’s steps.

Adelinde is roaming around the living room of Dawn Winery, muttering to herself about Master Kaeya. When you end up talking to her about the “rumours” from Moco and Hillie after finishing the “Cleanup At Dawn” world quest, she just shrugs it off and laughs, saying that those are just tall tales that bear no meaning.

You almost let out a sigh of relief when she suddenly offers you Sticky Honey Roast to bring with you on your journey.

She says she made extra “steak”. She further presses the gift onto you by telling you that they are “perfectly normal animal steaks” as she chuckles.

You think about the missing guest and the mess you just cleaned up for Adelinde. The dirt tracks could have been evidence of how things went down for that poor guest, and how it seems like turning them into meals and dumping their leftover remains to make the flowers grow is a clean-up job that leaves absolutely no trace… after all, ground bones are believed to be great fertilizers...

That, or this is just Adelinde's way of keeping nosy guests out of Diluc's private business.

The Two Lovers’ Plot at Feiyun Slope

In the message board in front of the Ministry of Civil Affairs, Gentry De’An has made a heart-breaking announcement.

His daughter, Huachu, has suffered a tragic death. In order to give her a funeral befitting her, he has now opted to sell the building which once housed Minghua Bank, which he used to manage.

If you read on further, you will find an announcement regarding the contamination of the well water at Chihu Rock.

A quite grievous crime with dire consequences, the Milelith are already on alert and ready to take down the criminal who dared sully the well. If you talk to Hongyi, the Milelith guard patrolling Feiyun Slope, he says that the well bore the scent of something rotting…

Checking the message board again, you will find out that the contamination in the well is actually a bloated dead body of a girl who they surmised had thrown herself into the well to end her life.

When you talk to Gentry De’An, he lets out that his daughter had been in a relationship with a poor Schoolmaster he didn’t approve of, and because of that she opted to take her life by drowning herself down the well, confirming that it is indeed his daughter Huachu whose body they found contaminating the water supply.

But the name “Huachu” might seem eerily familiar to you.

If you’ve explored around Liyue’s border to Mondstadt at Stone Gate, at Pops Zhou’s tea stand, you remember that a woman named Huachu is seated with a man named Jianqui.

If you talk to her, she says she is the second daughter of the manager of Minghua Company and is out on a confidential company excursion.

Talking to Jianqui, he states that he used to teach arithmetic to poor children before becoming an assistant for Minghua Company. Tying all of the information we’ve found out so far together, it looks like Huachu is alive and has actually eloped with her poor schoolmaster lover, Jianqui.

But then... whose body was it that the Milelith found in the well? And who is Gentry De’An burying, exactly?

It seems that the lovers have opted to take a very extreme measure just to be together…

Ruu’s Grisly Fate

By now, we all know the tragic story of Ruu and Tsurumi Island.

This beloved little boy was once the willing victim of a ritual that had him offered to the Thunderbird Kanna Kapatcir, whom he had briefly befriended and sang to. The two unlikely friends, one human, the other a god, promised to meet each other again.

But with his friends disappearing into the fog to try to escape Tsurumi Island, Ruu chose to sacrifice himself to have them be brought back and to appease the Thunderbird.

This choice doomed Tsurumi Island, however, as after learning of Ruu’s death, Kanna Kapatcir furiously devastated the island and cursed all of the islanders to relive the days leading to their demise over and over again for all eternity as punishment for his demise. She believed that his sacrifice was murder, and that the promise they made that was broken could not be forgiven.

But did you know exactly how Ruu was sacrificed?

If you read the lore behind the artifact set Thundering Fury, you will know that the chosen sacrifice would be killed on the sacrificial altar, with their blood collected into the goblet Omen of Thunderstorm.

The English translation is kinder with the description, but the literal translation from the Chinese version (the game’s original language) states that the Village Shaman separated his blood from his bones while he was still alive.

To do that, they would have needed to get his blood from his bone marrow. Which can only mean that Ruu was hacked to pieces. Alive.

And since Tsurumi Island was cursed to repeat the days that led to its doom… it meant that before we cleansed the island of Kanna Kapatcir’s rage and grief, Ruu had been reliving his grisly end for centuries.

Washizu’s Sinister Instruction

During the civil war between Watatsumi Island and the Shogunate, Tatarasuna in Kannazuka and Higi Village in Yashiori Island were probably the most affected areas by the conflict.

Caught in no man's land, the Higi villagers suffered shortages and an influx of refugees trying to escape the violence.

The village head, Washizu, did his best to accommodate the villagers and to protect his home and the Village Shrine, but in the end it was all for naught.

When members of the Watatsumi Resistance destroyed the wards that held off the Serpent God’s curse, the dark Tatarigami began to poison the minds of anyone who was affected by it. One by one the villagers fled Higi village, searching for respite from pirates who could help them.

Washizu, although bravely trying to save his people, succumbed to this curse and went insane, believing that he could hear the voice of a god he called "Him".

We encounter him as we explore Tatarasuna, guarding a shrine silently, telling us to pray three times before leaving a chest full of treasure.

We find him in various shrines around Tatarasuna in the following days afterwards, telling us to pray three times and rewarding us with treasure. In the end he snaps and attempts to attack us, leaving no choice for the Traveler but to slay him in self-defence.

Later on we find his logbook abandoned in Higi Village, recording the tale of his slow descent into madness.

In the end, consumed by the voice of his dark god, Washizu began sacrificing any person he could find, be it man, woman, or child, a member of his village or not.

He had set his eyes on sacrificing Chouji’s mother, but failed in doing so as she had already fled to Sumeru.

Tormented by this setback, he set his eyes on the Nameless Outlander, the last name in his logbook, and ultimately his last failure…
