Theatre of Gadsden takes wins in BroadwayWorld Birmingham awards

Theatre of Gadsden had an excellent showing in the 2022 BroadwayWorld Birmingham Awards, announced last week.

This year's awards honor the best regional productions, touring shows and more with first performances between Oct. 1, 2021 through Sept. 30, 2022, according to BroadwayWorld.com.

Theatre of Gadsden shows were considered along with offerings from several theater groups, including Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Encore Theatre and Gallery, UAB Theatre, Aggie Theatre, University of Montevallo, Virginia Samford Theatre, Jefferson Academy of Theatre and Dance, The Lighthouse Theatre Company, Opera Birmingham, Pike Road Theatre Company, Red Mountain Theatre and Birmingham Black Repertory Theatre Collective.

Awards went to the following Theatre of Gadsden members or shows in 11 of 20 categories:

Best Costume Design of a play or musical: Winner — Hillary Cunningham, “Big River”; runner-up — Joy Tilley Perryman, “Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash”

Best Direction of a Musical: Winner — Mike Beecham, “Big River”

Best Ensemble Performance: Winner — The cast of “Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash”; runner-up — “Big River”

Best Lighting Design of a Play or Musical: Winner — Cassie Cunningham, “Big River”; runner-up — Jenn Luck, “Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash”

Best Music Direction & Orchestra Performance: Winner – Billy Jenkins, “Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash”; runner-up: Angie Campbell, “Big River”

Best Musical: Runner-up c “Big River”

Best Performer in a Musical: Runner-up — John Christopher Adams, “Big River”

Best Scenic Design of a Play or Musical: Winner - Kendelle Stovall and Joe Cannon, “Big River”; runner-up: Richard Dean and Julie Nelson, “Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash”

Best Sound Design of a Play or Musical: Winner — Wayne Cornutt, “Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash”

Best Supporting Performer in a Musical: Runner-up — Cole Cannon, “Big River”
