‘How do you like them apples?’: The best movies shot in Massachusetts

Oscar season is here. And while the glitz and glamour of Hollywood is three thousand miles away, there is still a rich history of movie magic worth celebrating in the Bay State.

BetMassachusetts.com has compiled a list they’ve dubbed the “Best Movies Shot in Massachusetts.”

The betting website assembled the list using IMDB ratings, Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score, Rotten Critic Score, Box Office totals and Oscars recognition as their criteria.

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, the 1966 adaptation of the play of the same name, took home the top spot. The drama was nominated for 13 Academy Awards, including acting noms for each of the four leads. The film, which now lives in the Library of Congress, used Northampton as the setting for its New England college smalltown.

The film which made everyone familiar with the time Robin Williams had to see about a girl slots into the silver medal spot. 1997′s Good Will Hunting was famously shot in Boston and the park bench on which Robin Williams and Matt Damon have their stirring conversation has become an unofficial landmark of The Common.

Critic-darling Sound of Metal rounds out the Top 3. Riz Ahmed stars as a rock drummer forced to come to grips with his rapidly progressing hearing loss. The 2019 Best Picture nominee was primarily shot in Ipswich.
