Released in 1980, Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" is considered by many to be one of the greatest horror films ever made.

Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, and Scatman Crothers starred in the movie, which is based on a novel by Stephen King.

In the years since the release of "The Shining," some of its stars, like Nicholson and Duvall, have continued to act, while others, like Lloyd, have taken a step back from Hollywood.

Here's what the cast of "The Shining" has been up to in the years since its release.

Jack Nicholson played Jack Torrance.

Jack Torrance is a writer and recovering alcoholic who takes a job as the winter caretaker at the Overlook Hotel.

While he initially plans to use the seclusion of the winter months to work on his writing, strange occurrences and evil spirits in the hotel eventually cause him to try and murder his wife, Wendy, and her son, Danny.

Nicholson has gone on to become one of Hollywood's most iconic actors.

After his role in "The Shining," Nicholson went on to star in films like "Terms of Endearment," "Batman," "A Few Good Men," "Something's Gotta Give," and "The Departed."

Over the years, Nicholson has been nominated for 12 Academy Awards, winning three times: in 1976 for his role in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," in 1984 for "Terms of Endearment," and in 1998 for "As Good as It Gets."

Nicholson has taken a break from acting in recent years, but has made appearances on shows like "Saturday Night Live," and was even featured in a 2016 HBO documentary about boxer Muhammad Ali.

Shelley Duvall played Wendy, Jack's wife and Danny's mother.

Wendy is initially supportive of Jack's plan to make a fresh start at the Overlook Hotel. But after mysterious forces begin tormenting Danny, she becomes suspicious of Jack and tries to escape.

One of the film's most iconic scenes features Wendy hiding in a bathroom, only for Jack to chop down the door with a hatchet and burst in.

At the end of the film, Wendy and Danny are able to flee the Overlook — leaving Jack to freeze to death in the hotel's maze.

Duvall retired from acting in 2002, after starring in films like "Popeye" and "Roxanne."

Following her role in "The Shining," Duvall went on to star as Olive Oyl in the live-action "Popeye" movie, and also appeared in films like "The Portrait of a Lady" and "Tale of the Mummy."

Duvall's final role was in the 2002 independent film "Manna from Heaven." She's remained largely out of the spotlight in the years since.

In 2016, Duvall was the focus of an hour-long segment for "Dr. Phil," during which she appeared unkempt and disoriented. After the segment aired, people voiced their concern for Duvall on social media and condemned "Dr. Phil" for seemingly taking advantage of the aging actress.

The role of Danny was played by Danny Lloyd.

Danny is Jack and Wendy's son who has telepathic powers, referred to as "shining" by the Overlook Hotel's cook, Dick Hallorann.

During his stay at the hotel, Danny encounters several evil spirits, including the infamous Grady twins, and has terrifying visions of death and destruction.

He's eventually able to escape the Overlook with his mother at the end of the film.

"The Shining" was Lloyd's only major movie to date.

After his appearance in a made-for-television film in 1982, Lloyd took a step back from the spotlight, and told the New York Daily News in 2013 that he leads "a pretty normal life now."

The former actor is now a biology professor at a community college outside of Louisville, Kentucky. He made a small cameo in the 2019 film "Doctor Sleep," which focused on the adult version of his "Shining" character Danny.

Ewan McGregor played the adult Danny in the film, but Lloyd can be spotted among a crowd of spectators during a baseball scene.

Scatman Crothers played telepathic cook Dick Hallorann.

Hallorann is the only one who's aware of Danny's telepathic gift, which he refers to as "shining." He tries to protect Danny from the sinister forces at play in the hotel and helps him process the horrifying things he sees.

After departing the hotel for the season, Hallorann returns after he has a premonition that something's terribly wrong at the Overlook. During his attempt to rescue Danny, he's killed with an axe by a delusional Jack.

Crothers died in 1986.

F0llowing his role in "The Shining," Crothers made guest appearances on shows like "Magnum PI" and "Taxi."

He continued to act in films up until his death, appearing in "Bronco Billy," "Zapped!," "Twilight Zone: The Movie," and others.

Philip Stone played the ghostly caretaker Delbert Grady.

Grady first makes an appearance when Jack encounters him during an otherworldly party in the hotel's Gold Room. It's implied that Grady was once a caretaker at the hotel, but died there after brutally murdering his wife and twin daughters.

Later on in the film, Grady tells Jack that he needs to "correct" Wendy and Danny's behavior, and ends freeing him from the pantry where Wendy had locked him.

Jack then goes on to terrorize his family.

Stone later starred in movies like "Flash Gordon" and "The Baby of Mâcon."

Stone also had roles in "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and "Green Ice."

He died in 2003. Stone's final role was in the made-for-TV film "Doomwatch: Winter Angel."

Joe Turkel played Jack's ghostly bartender friend Lloyd.

In one of the movie's more chilling scenes, Lloyd pours Jack several drinks while listening to him complain about his marriage and relationship with Danny.

Turkel went on to play Dr. Eldon Tyrell in 1982's "Blade Runner."

In addition to his role in "Blade Runner," Turkel also starred in the 1990 horror film "The Dark Side of the Moon."

The infamous Grady twins were played by Lisa and Louise Burns.

The twins make a brief yet memorable appearance in "The Shining" when Danny encounters them during one of his bike rides through the hotel.

They famously invite Danny to "come and play" with them, but after he sees horrifying images of their bloodied and mangled bodies in the same hallway, he closes his eyes and rides away.

Later, it's revealed that the twins were murdered by their father, Delbert Grady, while he was working as a caretaker at the Overlook.

The sisters are no longer working in Hollywood, but run a Twitter account devoted to their characters.

According to the Daily Mail, Lisa is now a lawyer, while Louise decided to pursue a career in science.

But the sisters reminisce about their time spent on set in tweets posted to their Twitter account.

They told Cosmopolitan in 2019 that their roles in "The Shining" weren't hard for them to film since they're both "naturally spooky."
