Then & Now: Do you know where this is?

Then & Now

Long before Julio Colangelo Sr. opened the grocery store pictured here, the area was home to a few business concerns.

There was Nelson and Rice Currier Shop, a leather supplier, and Bailey Brothers Store, a maker and seller of clothes.

In the mid-1900s, Colangelo, working closely with his wife, Nicolette, opened a grocery store on the land. Julio's Market was among the many independent food stores that dotted the landscape.

Colangelo, a World War II veteran, initially found business success as a partner of Indiana Screw Machine Products on Shrewsbury Street in Worcester.

The mom-and-pop grocery store spent 30 years in the building shown in this week's Then photo, from November 1978. By that time, there were outposts of the market in other communities.

Not long after the photo was taken, this Julio's store relocated. The new store was close by. Very close.
