For the thousands of people who lined the six-mile route from Worcester Airport to the College of the Holy Cross, it was a different kind of Presidents Day.

On June 10, 1964, the day the president came to Worcester, it seemed the entire city converged on streets covered by the slow-moving motorcade of President Lyndon B. Johnson. Estimates at the time put the count at 175,000 watchers.

This week's Then photo shows the LBJ motorcade about 10 a.m., 30 minutes after the president's plane touched down at the airport.

Johnson was in the city to deliver the commencement address at Holy Cross, keeping a commitment initially made by John F. Kennedy. In the photo, Johnson is in the front vehicle, with the Secret Service wary of open-air vehicles after the assassination of JFK.

Some readers might be thrown off by the Flowerland storefront in this photo. The popular florist is still in business, but is now in West Boylston.
