Most Carvel ice cream stores have melted from the landscape, but for older generations, the store's trademark products somehow froze as childhood memories.

"Cookie Puss," an old-timer will reflectively bark at the mere mention of Carvel.

"Fudgie the Whale," an uncle might counter.

The speciality cakes were the calling card of the New York-based ice cream chain. Birthdays and holidays warranted an ice cream cake. And special occasions. How about getting a Carvel cake any other time? Only if you had a cool mother.

At one time, there were about a half-dozen Carvel shops in Central Massachusetts, including the one shown in this week's Then photo, from 1978. This store closed in 1993, when the owners, a husband and wife, were ready for retirement.

The building was eventually razed, replaced by a new structure that has held a few businesses over the years, including a bank.

These days, there are 336 Carvel stores in the United States, four in Massachusetts. At one time there were more than 850 locations. The signature ice cream cakes are sold in supermarkets.
