Theology with a Twist to be held Tuesday in Kutztown [Religion Digest]

Nov. 4----Theology with a Twist will be held on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Kutztown Tavern, 272 W. Main St., Kutztown. Dr. Jill Peters will lead the discussion, tackling the questions: What is the future of the local church? Who would miss us if we were gone? What about our current church culture has pushed us toward extinction? Peters is the Crossroads, Missional Leadership Developer at Moravian Seminary. The event is free, but food and drink can be purchased in the restaurant downstairs and brought up to the event space. Parking is available in the community lot behind the tavern or on Main Street.

—St. John's Lutheran Church, 45 N. Reading Ave., Boyertown, will host a Salute to Veterans on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. There will be a free drive-thru, take-out meal today from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. No registration necessary. —St. John's Reformed Church, 4001 Penn Ave., Sinking Spring, will host an indoor yard sale and bake sale fundraiser next Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in Stoudt Fellowship Hall (lower level.) The proceeds will benefit a 9-year-old stroke and cardiac arrest survivor who has been hospitalized in Philadelphia since last December. The event will feature clothing (boys, girls, infants) and items and antiques for sale, raffles, giveaways and food and baked goods. Parking is located behind the church and in the lot at the corner of Penn Avenue and South Hull Street.

—St. John's (Hain's) United Church of Christ, 591 N. Church Road, Lower Heidelberg Township, will honor veterans during the 9:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday. The Rev. Douglas Etter, chief communications officer at the Lebanon VA Medical Center and a retired U.S. Army colonel, will be the guest speaker. Special music will include bagpiper Jim Scott, who will lead the congregation to the church cemetery after the service for a short veterans program.

a holiday bazaar next Saturday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. There will be crafts, a Chinese auction and white elephant items. Breakfast sandwiches, homemade soups, BBQ, hot dogs and baked goods will be for sale.

—St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 5 W. Arch St., Fleetwood, will coffee hour in the social room after the 9 a.m. worship service on Sunday. The annual Christmas bazaar and white elephant sale will be held next Sunday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. with a toy room, food, crafts, baked goods, silent auction and a book room with author Dori Hoch signing her book "Bunny Brothers."

—St. Andrew's United Church of Christ, 1320 Spruce St., Reading, will be holding a fall food sale next Saturday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Homemade ham and bean soup, homemade chili, hamburger barbecue, hot dogs, apple dumplings, shoo-fly pie apple crumb pies, pumpkin pies beverages and assorted baked goods will be available for purchase to eat in and/or take out.

—Christ Episcopal Church, 435 Court St., Reading, will host the annual Kristallnacht service in association with our local Jewish brothers and sisters on Wednesday. The "Circle of Light" will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the courtyard, and the service will begin inside the church at 7. Parking is available in the Abe Lincoln Hotel garage and the M&T Bank lot, both located off of Washington Street. Handicap spaces are located beside the church on Court Street.

—The 9 a.m. worship service on Sunday at Maidencreek Church, 261 Main St., Maidencreek Township, will include a piano selection by Sophie Esterly, flute selection by Kelli Sassaman and senior choir anthem accompanied by James Ayrton, Amy Powlus and Brenna Sharkey on trumpet and SaraAnn Harbonic on trombone.

—Good Shepherd United Church of Christ, 170 Tuckerton Road, Muhlenberg Township, will hold vacation Bible school today from 5:30-8 p.m. and Sunday from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m., meals included. A new worship series: Moving out of Scare City: Towers of Power, will begin on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

—Christ Lutheran Church, 1301 Luzerne St., Reading will host the Lutheran bishop from Argentina and Paraguay, Wilma Rommel, on Sunday at 11 a.m. Rommel is making her first visit to the Northeastern PA Synod.

Bern Township church to mark 25th anniversary

Bern Lutheran Church, 820 W. Leesport Road, Bern Township, will be celebrating its 25th anniversary on Nov. 12 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Kenneth Gould and the Rev. William Fryer leading the worship service. Special music by previous church organists and well-known trumpeter Dave Stahl, will be performed before, during, and after worship. A luncheon will be held after the service.
