Regarding Mike Kelly's column: "Trump and Hunter Biden are train wrecks," NorthJersey, Aug. 30:

Hunter Biden has much to regret and be ashamed of. Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed a special counsel and Hunter Biden will face the consequences of his misdeeds. However, comparing the impact of his behavior on the country with that of Donald Trump is ludicrous. The ex-president's behavior has so eroded the fiber of American society that our country has not been this divided in 160 years.

Under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, one is ineligible to hold office if he has "engaged in insurrection or rebellion, or given aid and comfort to the enemies thereof." Trump has shown himself to be just such a villain. If he is reelected in spite of the 91 indictments against him, he will attempt to pardon himself for his own crimes. The idea that anyone in office would have so much unchecked power that he or she could overturn the rule of law is precisely why the Founding Fathers fought against allowing a king.

The Declaration of Independence is quite specific: "The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations... He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good." The Declaration goes on to say, "A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people."

I urge your readers to see the difference in magnitude between a criminal and a tyrant.
