There's over 35 Little Free Libraries in Livingston County. Which will you visit?

LIVINGSTON COUNTY — Summer vacation is coming fast. But that doesn't mean students and families will have a shortage of reading opportunities.

There are over 30 Little Free Libraries to visit across Livingston County, and even more to discover.

Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization based in St. Paul, Minnesota. Their mission is to build community, inspire reading and expand access to books through free exchange boxes across the country. Through them, anyone may take or share a book anytime.

Each box in Livingston County is unique. Some are owned by families to honor someone they've lost, some are operated by organizations like Brighton State Recreation Area, Howell Carnegie District Library, the Friends of the Howell Carnegie Library, the Livingston County Health Department, Great Start Livingston Parent Coalition and Salvation Army of Livingston County — and still others have different meanings.

Here's a shortened list of where to find your next literary adventure:

Faith-Based Little Free Libraries

Faith based children's books, DVDs and CDs can be found at the St. George Lutheran Little Free Library, located at 815 W. Main St. in Brighton. Members of the church said they hope to instill a love of reading and provide easy access to faith-based media for the youngest members of our community.

Family-Built Little Free Libraries

In Brighton, the Lanzi Family has a Little Free Library at 134 Leith St. They love to read and loved the idea of creating something for the community.

The Livingston Little Library, at 1013 Livingston St. in Brighton, was built and carved out of the base of a tree stump.

Gifted Little Free Libraries

Andrea's Little Free Library, located at 735 Rickett Road in Brighton, was gifted to a mother for Mother's Day. Kacey Tulley has a Little Free Library at 719 Oak Ridge Drive in Brighton. She's loved them for years, and her daughter decided to build one for her.

The Little Yellow Paige's Library, located at 2454 Pleasant Ridge in Howell, was a surprise Christmas gift for a former kindergarten teacher. Vicky Hertrich also received her Little Free Library as a Christmas present from her eldest son and daughter-in-law as a replica of her house at 603 W. Washington St. in Howell.

Rhonda Mesaeh has always wanted a Little Free Library, so her sister Renee Goetz made one for her, located at 2387 Byron Road in Howell.

Fowlerville

In Fowlerville, Little Free Libraries can be found at 131 Mill St. and 701 Devonshire. There's also one at 130 S. Grand Ave.

Pinckney

In Pinckney, the Millcrest Moors Little Library can be found at 8135 Kimble Drive. The family loves reading and has wanted a little library for a long time. There's also DI's Library, located at 8604 Country Club Road. The library was out of cedar and has three shelves.

You can also find Theresa's Library at the Lake at 8760 Dexter Town Hall Road.

Unique Little Free Libraries

Best Free Little Library at 410 Byron Road in Howell and Peyton's Little Free Library at 410 W. Clinton St. in Howell are extra unique. Best Free Little Library was made out of an old Detroit Free Press newspaper box by a little girl and her father. Peyton's Little Free Library was created to build friendship in the community. It's hard to miss, because it's a pink refrigerator.

Another unique Little Free Library can be found at Bishop Lake Campground at Brighton State Recreation Area, 5210 Bishop Lake Road In Brighton. The library was built by a park ranger from a dead ash tree. It has three book nooks for kids, teens and adults.

Little Free Libraries In Memory Of

One special Little Free Library was created in memory of Chase Michael Edwards, who lost his battle with depression in 2003 at 12 years old. The library has brochures on youth suicide prevention, grief support books and other information, beyond just regular books. There are also puppy treats.
