Registration is under way for the Fall 2023 Art Classes and Workshops at Holmes Center for the Arts scheduled for August, September and October.

Home School Art – Elementary

Instructor: Karen Drongowski. Cost is $120. Classes begin Aug. 31, and are held Thursdays, Sept. 7, 14, 21, 28, Oct. 5, 12 and 19, from 9:30-11 a.m.

Explore a variety of two- and three-dimensional art techniques inspired by famous artists or art movements.  All materials are provided.

Home School Art – Middle and High School

Instructors: Cathie Lynch and Naomi Shumway. Cost is $120. Classes begin Thursday, Aug. 31, and are held Sept. 7, 14, 21, 28, Oct. 5, 12 and 19, from 9:30-11 a.m.

Old School/New School:  Students will work with traditional drawing and painting techniques for the first four weeks with Cathie Lynch, then will switch gears to digital art techniques for the last four weeks with Naomi Shumway.  Students are encouraged to have a sketchbook for the first session, students will work on iPad Pro (provided by an Appalachian Ohio Foundation Grant) for the second session.

After School Art – Grades 1-5

Instructor: Karen Drongowski

Two Sessions:  Session 1:  Sept. 6, 13, 20, and 27, Session 2:  Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25, 4:15-5:15 p.m. $45 per session.

These four-week sessions are inspired by famous artists or by an element of design. Each child will complete a drawing, a painting, a collage and a print in each class.  (Projects will be different in each session). All materials are included.

Wednesday Evening Art – Teens and Adults

Instructor: Karen Drongowski.

Two Sessions:  Session 1:  Sept. 6, 13, 20, and 27. Session 2:  Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25, 5:30-6:30 Cost is $40 per session.

Learn different styles of art including painting, drawing, and printmaking in an encouraging environment (plus some art history). Make friends! Build community.  No experience necessary.

Adult Art – Thursday Afternoons

Instructor: Karen Drongowski.

Two Sessions:  Session 1:  Sept. 7, 14, 21, and 28,  Session 2:  Oct. 5, 12, 19 and 26, 12-1:30, cost is $60 per session or $15 per class.

Hand-building Clay Techniques for Teens and Adults, beginners

Instructor: Marlea Hershberger-Leinbach, $60, $20 supply fee.

Mondays, Sept. 11, 18 and 25, 4-6 p.m.

Hand-building with slabs and texture.  Students will design and build a ceramic incense burner or lantern.

Digital Art for Kids (ages 9 – up)

Instructor: Michelle Richey. $45 per session (limit 10 students).

Session 1:  Tuesdays, Sept. 5, 12, 19 and 26, 4-5 p.m.

Session 2:  Tuesdays, Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 24, 4-5 p.m.

Learn to create with iPad Pro, students will use Procreate to master basic digital art methods using tools, layers, and the color wheel.

Digital Art for Tweens  and Teens

Instructor: Addie White. $45 per session (limit 10 students).

Session 1: Saturdays, Sept. 9, 16, 23 and 30, 10-11 a.m.

Session 2:  Saturdays, Nov. 4, 11, 18 and Dec. 2, 10-11 a.m.

Learn the ins and outs of digital art using Procreate on iPad Pro.  Students will use different tools and layers and work with the color wheel.

Instructor: Michelle Richey $45 per session (limit 10 students)

Session 1:  Tuesdays, Sept. 5, 12, 19 and 26, 5-6 p.m.

Learn to create beautiful artwork on iPad Pro using Procreate.  Artwork can be reproduced on tee shirts, as cards, and in many other ways.  No experience necessary.

Sustainable Styles for Teens and Adults

Instructor: Frankie Schlabach. Cost: $75.

Saturdays, Sept. 9, 16, 30, Oct. 7, and 14, 12:30-2 p.m.

Personalize thrift store finds and upgrade your closet with easy and sustainable projects!  Classes will feature:  Sneaker-painting, customized denim and jewelry upcycling.  Embrace this fashionable and sustainable art form and glean ideas you can use going forward.

Wheel Throwing Ceramics

Instructor: Eric Yoder. Cost is $150, with $30 supply fee.

Tuesdays, Oct. 31 through Dec. 12, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Seven-week course for beginners through advanced, make your own Christmas gifts.

Friday Night Out with Art:

Check out these fun workshops in a variety of mediums.  Invite a friend or a group of friends to join you.  Bring a beverage of choice and get creative.

Sept. 8Mixed Media Oil Painting Workshop 6-7:30 p.m.

Instructor: Marlea Hershberger-Leinbach (teen-adult), cost is $25.

Explore oils and cold wax medium to create textures and translucent layers.  Bring your own oil paints, brushes, and palettes.  All other materials will be supplied.

Sept. 15:  Acrylic Paint & Sip, 6-7:30 p.m.

Instructor: Karen Drongowski (teen-adult), cost is $25.

This fun and rewarding technique is a great way to relax, let the paint flow, and enjoy the experience.

Sept. 22, Oct. 20, Nov. 17:  Watercolor Class, 6-7:30 p.m.

Instructor: Michelle Steffen (teen-adult). Cost: $55.

Three-week introductory watercolor course as follows:

Day 1:  Let’s play:  Materials, color mixing, and painting techniques

Day 2:  Fall Folly:  Shapes, edges, lines, and negative painting.

Day 3:  All together now:  Composition and application of techniques.

Students should purchase a small watercolor set, Michelle recommends Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolor Paint Set (Field Set), and an XL multimedia sketchbook to practice activities at home.  Other materials will be provided.

Sept. 29:  Silk Scarf Dying, 6-7:30

Instructor: Leslie McKelley (teen-adult, limit six). Costs: $15 for class, $10 materials fee.

Create a beautiful hand-dyed silk scarf for yourself or as a one-of-a-kind gift.

Oct. 6:  Mixed Media Oil Painting Workshop 6-7:30 p.m.

Celebrate Autumn by making leaf prints without a press, this is a new technique using gelli plates.

October 27:  Poetry, The Sounds of Language, 6-7:30 p.m.

Instructor: Jennifer McCluggage (teen – adult), cost is $15.

Come find your poet’s voice with us.  Explore the deliberate use of sound to add to the emotional impact of your writing.  Students will examine line breaks and read several different poems to see the effect of form on tone.  Participants will draft original work, and will have the opportunity to share aloud if they wish.  They will learn artistic ways to present their writings.  Materials needed:  notebook, pencil/pen.

Nov. 3:  Felted Elf or Mr. or Mrs. Claus, 6-7:30

Instructor: Lydia Johnson (ages 12 and up), costs are: $15 for class, $10 for supply kit.

Create an adorable felted elf or Mr. or Mrs. Claus just in time for the holidays.

Nov. 10:  Alcohol Ink Exploration, 6-7:30 p.m.

Instructor: Karen Drongowski (teen-adult), cost is $25.

Explore this exciting new medium using a variety of surfaces:  paper, canvas, and tile.  No experience necessary.

Saturday, Nov. 18, Fraktur, Holiday-Christmas Workshop, 1-3:30

Learn the elaborate folk art created by the Pennsylvania Dutch. Create your own reproducible Christmas card or simply practice this unique art from.
