There's still time to comment on proposed changes to the west side of the Lloyd Expressway

EVANSVILLE — West Siders, University of Southern Indiana students and anyone traveling toward Posey County on the Lloyd Expressway will need to prepare for extensive road construction starting in 2024 and going through 2027.

The Indiana Department of Transportation hosted a public hearing Tuesday in which project officials gave an overview of plans on the western portions of the Lloyd Expressway and heard comment from residents. A previous public hearing was held in March on the east end of the project.

Construction is expected to start in Spring 2024 from Posey County Line Road to Ingle Avenue. This will last until 2025. Then construction will begin in 2026 from Ingle Avenue to Wabash Avenue.

Comments were limited Tuesday evening, with the five residents who spoke mainly putting questions onto the record as opposed to direct statements.

One had questions about whether there would be changes to the speed limit, another asked why her area wasn't consulted about a potential sound barrier when a neighboring area had been.

Kent Hollander had concerns about the intersection at Red Bank Road and the Lloyd Expressway.

The plan is to add dual displaced left turns, which means cars are moved to the left side of the road before reaching the intersection and have their own stoplight that coordinates with the signal for those heading east and west.

Hollander said he has sat at that intersection through three or four lights wanting to turn left to head to Walmart. He was worried there would now be even longer to wait if all the traffic was moved to one lane, instead of the two there now.

He also said he thinks the traffic could back out into the regular lanes based and obstruct traffic flow.

Changes along the west side Lloyd will take place

St. Joseph Avenue: Traffic signal timing updates to better coordinate with Wabash Avenue.

Barker Avenue/Igleheart Avenue: the westbound exit loop ramp from South Barker will be closed. South Barker traffic will be added to the North Barker westbound exit.

Corbierre Avenue: the westbound Tekoppel Avenue exit will be relocated. Corbierre will be reconstructed from Tekoppel to east of Addison.

Rosenberger Avenue: signal modification to restrict right turns on red. Turn lanes will also be extended and pavement upgraded.

Red Bank Road: dual displaced left turns will be added. This means cars are moved to the left side of the road before reaching the intersection and have their own stoplight that coordinates with the signal for those heading east and west.

Boehne Camp Road: Turn lanes will be added and lengthened. There will be new pavement markings, signage and replacement of the light at the Lloyd and Boehne Camp.

Middle Mount Vernon Road and Felstead Road: restricted crossing U-turns will be done at both roads. Drivers wanting to make a left turn will turn right on to the main roadway and then further up make a U-turn in the designated lane that will put them in the direction they want to go.

Schutte Road: signalized left turns for Lloyd Expressway traffic will be done through restricted crossing U-turns.
