As its name suggests, International Women’s Day is celebrated globally with different countries marking the occasion in different ways.

Gender equality, violence against women and the right to an education were just some of the issues discussed around the world yesterday and thousands of people took to the streets to call for action.

In New York Emma Watson lit up the Empire State Building to promote her HeForShe campaign, in Britain, MP Jess Phillips read the names of the 120 women murdered in the county since International Women’s Day 2015 in the House of Commons and there were numerous rallies and protests held across the globe to shout about issues affecting women.

But how Lithuania marked the occasion has warmed our hearts. Just like they have done for the past few years, police officers pulled over female drivers and handed them a bunch of flowers to celebrate the day - putting a smile on the faces of numerous Lithuanian women.

A simple gesture, but one that’s struck a chord with the Internet.

Of course, as is the case with most things, not everyone was in support of the initiative and some people have called for it to be stopped, deeming it as sexist.
