Thieves tell woman her water has COVID-19 contamination to get into home, TX cops say

Police say suspects accused of stealing jewelry from a woman’s Texas home told her that her water might be contaminated with COVID-19 in order to get inside.

Several people convinced the woman that they needed to go into her home to check the water, the Garland Police Department said in a Facebook post Wednesday. While she was distracted, police say, they stole her jewelry.

“These suspects are using manipulating tactics to take advantage of innocent people. Don’t let these criminals fool you!” police wrote.

Police warned against letting people who say they are utility workers into your house unless you have a scheduled visit. Make sure they have ID badges and distinct uniforms and drive vehicles that are identifiable, police advised.

The department asked for the public’s help to identify the suspects and to call the Garland Police Department at 972-485-4840 with more information.

There isn’t evidence that COVID-19 can be spread through drinking water, sewer water or recreational water, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Protection.

More than 3 million people have been infected with COVID-19 in the United States as of July 9, according to Johns Hopkins University. More than 132,000 people have died in the United States.
