‘That thing is on a mission.’ Watch a cop escort an alligator across a Florida road

Why did the gator cross the road?

In Florida, that’s an age-old question. But the reason usually has to do with the reptile wanting to get to the other side, where there’s a body of water.

In Tampa on Thursday, in video taken by a FOX 13 photographer, an alligator is seen making its way quite hastily across a highway, as a police officer stops traffic and guides the animal with a trapping tool.

The alligator high-tails it over the concrete, waddling as it goes. In its haste, it trips slightly.

In the comments section, people commended the officer’s wrangling abilities; e.g., “Awesome job getting him to a safe place.”

Others couldn’t help but notice the cop’s expression in doing something that isn’t exactly in the line of his everyday duties.

“The officer looking like I don’t get paid enough for this,” someone joked with laughing emojis.

Others took note of how quickly the gator hustled out of the busy thoroughfare.

“He can’t get away fast enough, so cute! Love wildlife!”

“That thing is on a mission.”

“It looks so cute wiggling itself across the road. Probably thinking, ‘Yeah, yeah, I’m going as fast as I can.’”

Don’t be surprised if your car gets halted for an alligator crossing, as it’s still mating season in Florida and these animals are on the move, according to the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission. Courtship begins in early April; mating occurs until May or June.
