Things to do in the Canandaigua area this week

Early voting in Ontario County started over the weekend and continued Monday, but you still have the rest of the week to weigh in early on many county and local races.

Voters can head to the polls noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31; noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5.

Vote at the Ontario County Board of Elections office, 74 Ontario St., Canandaigua; Victor Town Hall, 85 E. Main St., Victor; or the Geneva Housing Authority office, 41 Lewis St., Geneva.

Voting won’t take up much of your time; you can easily fit in some classes and enjoy other fun activities.

Here’s what's happening this week.

1. Happy Halloween in Hopewell

Station No. 1 Fire House on County Road 4 will be the scene of lots of Halloween fun. The Hopewell Halloween party runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31. All residents of Hopewell are invited for candy, hotdogs, doughnuts, cider and chips.

2. Seniors, learn to use those smartphones at Wood Library

Wood Library is offering some help for Ontario County senior citizens with their smartphones in two classes. New to Smartphones-Android will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1. This beginner class will review basic smartphone hardware, software and apps. Bring a fully charged phone to follow along and ask questions. The second is a class on YouTube, which will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2. Participants will earn how to watch, create and upload videos to YouTube, as well as start a channel of your own. Learn the importance of saving, sharing, commenting and rating videos on YouTube. 3. Holloway House cookbook distributions in Bloomfield

Dawn Wayne has just released a cookbook, "The Holloway House: Remembering Great Food & Good Times." She and husband Steve owned the iconic restaurant in Bloomfield for years before closing.

Distribution for “The Holloway House: Remembering Great Food & Good Times” cookbook will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Nov. 1 at the East Bloomfield Historical Society, 8 South Ave., Bloomfield, and from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Bloomfield Library, 9 Church St. The cookbook costs $24. 4. Compost your pumpkins in Canandaigua

In addition to pumpkins, other Halloween leftovers like gourds, flowers, hay and cornstalks will be accepted (but no plastic or metal) at a composting event set for 8 to 11 a.m. Nov. 4 at the Ontario County parking lot, at the corner of Ontario and Pleasant streets, Canandaigua. A similar event is planned for 8 to 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at the town of Geneva Transfer Station, 32 White Springs Road. Both are free and open to Ontario County residents. 5. Grandma knows genealogy

David Bloom will be presenting a program on “What My Grandmother Taught Me About Genealogy” at the next Ontario County Genealogical Society meeting, which will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 1. The meeting will be at the Ontario County Historical Society, 55 N. Main St., Canandaigua. Bloom is a member of the OCGS. Please use the side door.

6. Take the easy bet on e-recycling at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack

Sunnking and Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack are teaming up for an e-recycling event from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 4 at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack in Farmington. The first 1,500 recyclers earn a free $10 Match Play card after dropping off devices. 7. Rose Cornish Fall Bazaar

The Rose Cornish Fall Bazaar will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Canandaigua American Legion, 454 N. Main St., Canandaigua. The Canandaigua American Legion Auxiliary 256 is hosting the event, which includes shopping from vendors, raffle, baskets and bake sale.

8. Winter farmers market opens in Canandaigua

The Winter Canandaigua Farmers Market opens for the season from 10 to 11 a.m. Nov. 4 in the parking lot on Antis Street behind Frequentem Brewing Co. The market will be held every two weeks until the next summer season opens in 2024.
