Things to do: First Fridays, new businesses, 'Anything Goes,' water guns and more

Kick off a new month with another great First Fridays in Columbia, with good food, music and more, and that's just the start of what this weekend has to offer.

1. First Fridays, Bradley Mountain opening

Can you believe it's already August?

Celebrate the new month as summer begins to wind down with another festive First Fridays, which believe it or not keeps getting bigger and better.

As always, the main First Fridays events will run from 5-8 p.m., with shops staying open late, live music, food trucks and more in downtown Columbia.

Just a block or two from downtown, The Maury County Chamber of Commerce will host Strolling on 6th, which will feature live music, vendors and food trucks along East 6th Street and North Main Street.

Downtown live music will feature Chief Smiley Ricks & The C-Town Specials at Daniel's Barbershop on The Square starting at 7 p.m. Incognito Band will also perform at McCreary's Irish Pub, S. Main St., starting at 7 p.m.

Also be sure to stop by the Columbia Arts District and visit the city's newest business, Bradley Mountain, a fine leather goods/coffee shop which opens Friday at 1202 S. Garden St. (next door to Mama Mila's).

2. 'Anything Goes' at Building Block

The Building Block School for The Arts is bringing out a real classic this weekend you won't want to miss.

The school, located at 1309 S. Main St., will premiere its performance of "Anything Goes," with showtimes at 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday. There will also be 2 p.m. matinee performances Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets are $15 per person and are available at the door or online at www.BuildingBlockArts.com.

3. Water Wars at Riverwalk

What I would give to have another summer being young and strapped with a Super Soaker ready for battle.

The Armory Recreation and Fitness Center invites the city's youth for an afternoon of getting soaked at Riverwalk Park as it hosts Water Wars this Saturday.

The event will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday and will feature an assortment of water-related activities, including balloons, water guns and a slip and slide. Kids can also have fun at the Columbia Rotary Splash Pad, which will be operating in full force Saturday.

4. 80's Prom at Ridley 4-H Center

Step back into the "me decade" for a night of dancing, big hair and a whole lot more at the Ridley 4-H Center, 850 Lion Parkway.

The Family Center will host a special 80's Prom from 6-9 p.m. Saturday at the center. Tickets are $10 per person and will be available at the door or at The Family Center, 921 Beckett St.

This is also a kid-friendly event for all ages, with a prom King and Queen being crowned at the end. All proceeds will benefit The Family Center.

5. Live entertainment

Cord Martin will perform at Farmstead Cellar & Tasting Parlour, , starting at 7 p.m. Friday.

Radney Foster will perform at The Mulehouse, 812 S. High St., starting at 8 p.m. Saturday. To purchase tickets, visit www.TheMulehouse.com.

Dark Waters Project will perform at The Tilted Mule, 102 Depot St., starting at 7 p.m. Saturday.

BLAYZE will perform at The Rebel Bar and Grill, 307 Riverside Drive, starting at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Amylase Band will perform at The Boondox, 3543 Highway 431, starting at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Throwback will perform at The Rebel Bat and Grill, 307 Riverside Drive, starting at 4 p.m. Sunday.
