First ladies honored in song at Canton church on Friday

The National First Ladies' Library will present "East Wing Songs" at 7 p.m. Friday at Christ Presbyterian Church in Canton.

First Ladies' Library, in conjunction with the church, will debut a new set of musical compositions inspired by the first ladies of the United States.

Tickets are free and available online via the National First Ladies’ Library Eventbrite site at https://eastwingsongs.eventbrite.com.

“Researching and getting to know these first ladies has been a joy," performer Ann Marie Daehn, a mezzo soprano, stage director and associate professor at Missouri State, said in a First Ladies Library news release. "To know them beyond their husbands and the politics was and is important to me."

"Music, and song in particular, is the perfect way to bring a bit of them to life for us all,” she said.

The pieces will be performed by Daehn and long-time collaborator Dr. Elizabeth Avery.

The songs featured were composed by Leanna Kirchoff, who selected women who span time, age, political party, and approach to their role within the White House, the news release said. Volume I will include songs for Martha Dandridge Washington, Margaret Smith Taylor, Frances Folsom Cleveland, Ida Saxton McKinley and Rosalynn Smith Carter.

The new pieces are set to tour the country with stops at other historical sites. Christ Presbyterian Church, 530 Tuscarawas St. W, has on-site parking.
