Things to do: Labor Day activities, final GreenJackets home gamescar shows and more

Looking for something to do? Monday, Sept. 5, is Labor Day, meaning a long weekend for many residents. Labor Day itself features trivia, games and other fun around town. Gear heads can rev their engines at this weekend’s local car shows, the headliner being the Ponies in the Plaza Grand National. Augusta GreenJackets fans can catch the last home ball games of the season. For those wanting live jams, severalconcerts hit stages across Augusta, including the final evening of the weekly voice competition, Edgar's Live, organized by Edgar's Above Broad. Here are more details on these and other upcoming festivities in the Augusta area:

Labor Day 2022 activities

Those wanting something competitive on their day off can try trivia. Trivia with Mike Sleeper is at 7 p.m. at Doc's Porchside at 3035 Washington Road in Augusta.  Dr. Factenstein’s Trivia is at 8:30 p.m. at Joes Underground at 144 8th Street in Augusta. Both events feature prizes for the top teams.

For a similar brain workout, brain games 9-11 a.m. at Smith Hazel Recreational Center at 400 Kershaw Street NE in Aiken. There will be several activities like chess, monopoly, jenga and adult coloring pages.

Puzzling Adventures, which combines scavenger hunts with self-guided tours, is back all day. For more information, go to allevents.in.

Local car shows

CSRA Mustang and Ford Club's Ponies in the Plaza MCA Grand National is Thursday, Sept. 1, through Sunday, Sept. 4. It kicks off with a street party at Evans Town Center Park off Washington Road on Thursday featuring live entertainment, with admission free and snacks available for purchase from local vendors. Over 350 Ford Mustangs will be on display outside the Columbia County Performing Arts Center with the best times to visit being Friday from noon to 5 p.m., Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The next Coffee and Cars Augusta event is Saturday, Sept. 3, 8-11 a.m. outside the Augusta-Richmond County Judicial Center at 735 James Brown Boulevard. Guests can enjoy the sights and sounds of various makes and models, plus coffee and food from local vendors. Admission is free to both guests and .

This week marks the last week of home games for the Augusta GreenJackets this season. They will be playing against the Salem Red Sox 7:05 p.m. weeknights, 6:05 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3-Sunday, Sept. 4.

The GreenJackets' last games are away games against the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers Tuesday, Sept. 6, through Sunday, Sept. 11.

Concerts

Over the last eight weeks, over 100 performers have been competing in "Edgar's Live" for the coveted title of being the first "Edgar's Idol." The last show is at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at Edgar's Above Broad at 699 Broad Street in Augusta. Winners are determined by judges and crowd cheers.

The next installment of the Grantski Records' concert series is 8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, at the record store at 1151 Broad Street in Augusta. It's the second "Rock Night" and will feature Augusta area acts like Bodega Cat, Easily Amused and the Acosta Brothers. The funds for the concert series go to the store's effort to build a venue space, including a stage. Tickets can be bought online at eventbrite.com.

The Landing on Bogus Hill Road's "Soul RNB Festival" is 5-10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, at the venue space at 23 Bogus Hill Road in North Augusta. It will showcase soul and R&B artists like King George, Sir Charles Jones, Nelson Curry, Hennessy Williams and DJ Trucker. Tickets can be bought online at eventbrite.com.

Special movie screenings

Monetta Drive-In is once again having its Labor Day special featuring three movies on its screens instead of the traditional two. "The Big Mo" is open Friday, Sept. 2, through Sunday, Sept. 4. Gates open at 6:30 p.m., with movies starting at dusk, around 8-8:15 p.m. Tickets can not be bought ahead of time and only cash is accepted. The drive-in is located at 5822 Columbia Highway North

Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the director's cut of "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" will be screened on Sunday, Sept. 4, and Monday, Sept. 5, at Regal Augusta Exchange at 1144 Agerton Lane in Augusta. Tickets can be bought at fathomevents.com.

As part of its "Films on Friday" series, Morris Museum of Art is showcasing the 1941 John Ford film "Tobacco Road," an adaptation of the scandalous 1932 novel of the same name and set in rural Georgia. Admission is free. The museum is located at 1 10th Street in Augusta.

First Friday

Augusta's next First Friday festival is the evening of Friday, Sept. 2. Guests will able to enjoy eating and shopping with the downtown businesses, plus plenty of live entertainment like

  • The opening of the "Kin, Spirit, Seed" exhibition at Westobou, open all day until 7 p.m.

  • Reception and awards ceremony for Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art's 40th annual juried fine art competition, "A Sense of Place," at 6 p.m.

  • 80's art reception at 600 Broad at 7 p.m.

  • Arcane Arts fire dancers at Broad and 11th Streets at 8 p.m.

  • Open mic night at Humanitree House at 9 p.m.
