Things to do in Murfreesboro, Rutherford County: Markets, musicals and 'wild things'

Events abound this week in Murfreesboro and Rutherford County such as Juneteenth celebrations, movies in the park — including family favorite "Ghostbusters" at Barfield Crescent Park — and the ongoing farmer's market.

And for the youngsters, don't forget about "SpongeBob the Musical" at Murfreesboro's Center for the Arts.

Main Street Saturday Market

Murfreesboro offers a weekly farmer's market every Saturday around the Courthouse Square, South Public Square. From 8 a.m. to noon, local crafters, beekeepers, farmers and more can be found selling artisanal products.

The SpongeBob Musical

This week, Murfreesboro's Center for the Arts, 110 West College street, is putting on "The SpongeBob Musical" for three days. Tickets can be bought for showings on June 11, 12 and 17, and times vary. Prices are $18 for adults, $16 for seniors, students, military and $14 for children.

"The SpongeBob Musical" is a musical adaptation of the Nickelodeon show "SpongeBob SquarePants."

Movie Under the Stars

Free for all ages, "Ghostbusters" will be shown in Barfield Crescent Park, 697 Veterans Parkway, at 8:30 p.m. on Monday, June 13. Concessions will be available, but it is advised to bring personal blankets, lawn chairs or other items on which to sit.

Open Knit, Crochet and Quilting

On Tuesday, June 14, knitters, crocheters and quilters are welcome to stop by St. Clair Street Senior Center, 325 St. Clair Street. From 10 a.m. to noon, inspiration and motivation will be found aplenty in this group. No sign-up is required, and supplies are not offered.

Story Time and Coloring at Cannonsburgh Village

Take the kids to color pictures and listen to stories under the shady trees of Cannonsburgh Village, 312 South Front Street, from 10 a.m. to 11. This event is free and on June 14.

Wild Things at the Wilderness Station at Barfield Crescent Park

June 15, Murfreesboro offers stories, songs, crafts and a walk at the Wilderness Station, 401 Volunteer Road. A different nature theme is chosen each week. The event takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and is $3 per child. Preregistration is required by calling the Wilderness Station the day before at (615) 217- 3017.

Boro Art Crawl

The Boro Art Crawl returns to the Courthouse Square, South Public Square, on June 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. In collaboration with Main Street Murfreesboro's Sip, Shop and Stroll, the art crawl is on and around the historic square. Local artists and vendors will set up shop with many items available to purchase.

Juneteenth: Authors' Night Book Signing

In celebration of Juneteenth, local authors will gather at Bradley Academy Museum and Cultural Center, 415 South Academy Street, to discuss their books. It is free for all ages and is from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Also, in celebration of Juneteenth, the Bradley Academy Museum and Cultural Center, 415 South Academy Street, will host a free resource night from 4 to 7 p.m.

A Summer Celebration for Families at Stones River National Battlefield

Tinkergarten invites everyone, especially the kids, to come out to Stones River National Battlefield, 3501 Old Nashville Highway, to celebrate the beginning of summer. Free for everyone, activities will include songs, dancing, crafts and education. This event is on June 17, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
