Things to do in Pueblo: Celebrate the Boys & Girls Club, catch a play, ride the Vialpando Vicla

Friday, May 20

Boys & Girls Clubs of Pueblo County 50th anniversary celebration, East Side Clubhouse, 625 N. Monument Ave. | The local Boys & Girls Club will celebrate 50 years in Pueblo with a community party, featuring a proclamation from the City of Pueblo, outdoor games and club activities, hot dogs, birthday cake and more. In the event of rain, the celebration will move inside. The party will go from 3 to 6 p.m.

'Twelve Angry Jurors,' Impossible Playhouse, 1201 N. Main St.| A community theater play written by Sherman L. Sergel and based on the Emmy-award-winning television series that “contemplates the huge responsibility of 12 ordinary people as they consider the guilt or innocence of a young man accused of murder,” opens Friday at the Impossible Playhouse. Show dates and times are May 20-21 at 7:30 p.m.; May 22 at 2 p.m.; May 27-28 at 7:30 p.m.; and June 3-4 at 7:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $15 and can be purchased at impossibleplayers.com.

Train Rides at the Depot, Pueblo Railway Museum, 200 W. B St. | The second event of the Pueblo Railway Museum’s 2022 train ride season runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and marks the debut of a new piece of equipment on the railway museum’s train. The museum’s Colorado & Wyoming caboose will give visitors something new to see and ride, and museum volunteers will speak about the history of its engines, cabooses, and other vehicles and artifacts. Train ride tickets are $15, cash or check only, for a ride in the engine and $8 for a ride in one of the museum’s three cabooses. Each train ride is approximately 20 minutes, so there will be multiple opportunities during the event to ride the train.  

Large household items disposal, CSU Pueblo and Colorado State Fairgrounds | The City of Pueblo and Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment are offering residents a no-cost opportunity to dispose of large household items and yard debris from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Items can be dropped off at the Thunderbowl parking lot, 2200 Rawlings Blvd., at Colorado State University Pueblo, on the north side, or at the State Fairgrounds — enter through Gate 3 on Mesa Avenue. One pickup-sized truckload per household. Items allowed include furniture, mattresses, carpet, used tires (five per household, removed from rims), yard waste and other large items. Yard waste that is easily packed in trash bags or boxes is preferred. No building materials, rocks, soil, hazardous waste, electronics, appliances or industrial waste.

Vialpando Vicla, Outpost Harley Davidson Pueblo, 5001 N Elizabeth St. | This motorcycle rally in memory of Isaiah Vialpando, who was fatally shot in downtown Pueblo in 2015, raises scholarship funds to “give Pueblo's young adults an avenue to use their minds for greatness and not go down the wrong path," organizers say. Participants can register on Friday, May 20, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Star Bar, 300 Spring St., and from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Oasis Bar, 1501 E. Evans Ave. The rally itself starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at the Outpost Harley Davidson store, with two hours of mariachi music, Aztec dancers and a blessing. Colorado State University Pueblo 2022 President’s Blue & Red Gala, Occhiato Student Center Ballroom, CSU Pueblo, 2200 Bonforte Blvd. | Join CSU Pueblo President Timothy Mottet at the annual President's Blue and Red Gala. Attendees can take a walk up the red carpet to the ballroom, get their photo snapped and enjoy an evening of food, drink and entertainment. Colorado's own Spinphony — a string quartet that breaks down barriers between classical, rock and pop — will provide the evening's entertainment. Tickets are $125 per person. Mental Wellness Block Party, Pueblo Union Depot, 132 W. B St. | The National Alliance on Mental Illness’s Southeast Colorado branch and Pueblo’s Friendly Harbor are hosting a day of no-cost food, activities, music and entertainment for the whole family. The block party’s purpose is to promote mental wellness and eradicate the stigma of mental health conditions by celebrating and introducing attendees to activities that will help promote their personal sense of wellness. 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Wednesday, May 25

Thunderbirds Performance, U.S. Air Force Academy Graduation, Colorado Springs | Immediately following the 2022 Air Force Academy graduation will be a flyover conducted by the Air Force’s aerial demonstration team, the Thunderbirds. Although tickets are required to attend the graduation ceremony, which begins promptly at 9:30 a.m., the air show is visible from many areas in northern Colorado Springs. Check this Sunday's Pueblo Chieftain for a guide on the best places to catch the show. Many of the locations are free.
