The nights are cooler, the rain has paused and the people have come out to play.

Football crowds are back home this weekend: Coming off a close win against Louisville, 3-0 Florida State has a big game against Boston College at Doak at 8 p.m. and FAMU Rattlers play Alabama A&M Bulldogs at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Tallahassee Ballet launches its 50th-anniversary season this weekend with An Evening of Music and Dance and Opening Nights will screen "1982," a film by Oualid Mouaness. And finally, expand your cultural diversity with the Experience Asia 2022 festival, beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday at Tom Brown Park and showcasing music, dance, food and artistry of our Asian community.

Young Bucks hit Northtown Getdown

The Young Bucks will be playing the latest installment of the Northtown Getdown at the pavilion at Bannerman Crossings from 7-10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23.

The band will be serving up its familiar originals as well as country and Southern rock favorites for the pregame college football crowd.

"Tallahassee's night scene really comes alive on these Fridays before FSU home games, and with the team starting to look like it may be on the right track, there's a lot of excitement and optimism in the air, and we fully expect a big and lively crowd out there," singer Tony Young said.

Bradfordville Blues Club gets funky

Tallahassee's nine-piece ensemble, The Funky Taters, fill the Bradfordville Blues Club, 7152 Moses Lane, with their big, soulful sound at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

They are "A group of musicians gathered together to funkify the atmosphere with bouncin' grooves" who feature a smorgasbord of American roots music ranging from folk,  Zydeco, Cajun, rock, dance, funk, reggae, country and blues with lots of harmonies. This posse includes Mike Lewis on guitar and vocals, Jan DeCosmo on percussion and vocals, Jared Farlin on keys, Christopher Seepersaud on guitar and Sitar, Jordan Green on drums, Justin Varnes on bass, and Rene Arbogast, Tom Longfellow and Dino Saliba on horns.

Advance tickets are $20 at bradfordvilleblues.com. Cover at the door is $25. Ms. Ernestine will be serving her famous catfish in her fry shack by the bonfire.

The Rusty Wright Band brings its hot mix of Texas and Chicago blues, Americana and blues rock inside the BBC at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24. While Rusty can sho' nuff scorch the frets, he's equally adept at backing it down with some string bendin' blues and even some soulful gospel.

Wright, who now calls Winter Haven home, is backed up by a stellar band with his wife, Laurie LaCross Wright, joining in vocal duets, lead vocals, and harmonies while playing some mean guitar chops, with Billy Agner on bass guitar and Vail Hayes on drums.

The Bradfordville Blues Club presents an intimate evening with Eric Sommer in a solo performance of guitar mastery at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29.  Eric emerged from the Boston music scene as a soloist to be reckoned with. He's a virtuoso on guitar with exquisite finger picking, slide, lap slap, open tuning on the fly, and six string wizardry.  From blues, folk, roots  and foot stomping ragtime, Eric also delivers as a songwriter, singer and storyteller. Advance tickets are $15 at bradfordvilleblues.com. Cover at the door is $20.

Get in the groove at Blue Tavern

Get happy at the Blue Tavern, 1206 N. Monroe St., from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, with Tommy Hoople's Delta Ringnecks. Settle in for roomful of percussion from 8-10:30 p.m. with Brushes with Greatness, featuring Leon Anderson Jr. and Michael Bakan. One small room. Two small drum sets. Two professorial paragons of percussion. Two pairs of brushes, no sticks! $10 cover.

Paddy League is up from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, with Brazilian guitar and songs. Tuesday is Bluesday features Blues Meets Girl from 8-10 p.m. Expect all the traditional music you love with flecks of originals in concert with the old ways. The duo recently returned as Semi-finalist in the International Blues Challenge. $3 cover.

Rick Redmond brings happy hour tunes from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, at the tavern. Doc Russell hosts Open Mic Night starting at 8 p.m.

Experience Asia is back at Tom Brown Park

Learn how to wear a Yukata and expand your cultural horizons at Experience Asia 2022, presented by Asian Coalition of Tallahassee beginning at 10 am. Saturday at Tom Brown Park.

Experience Asia is a cultural celebration that showcases the unique and diverse heritages of the various Asian communities in the state’s capital. The one-day event features live traditional and contemporary musical performances, folkloric dance showcases, cultural demonstrations and one-of-a-kind arts and crafts. This family-friendly festival is free to the public and features Asian performers, artists, demonstrations, and foods from countries including China, Taiwan and the Philippines.

Tallahassee Ballet's 50th season opens with 'Sounds of Brazil'

On it's 50th anniversary season, Tallahassee Ballet presents An Evening of Music & Dance, an annual performance dating back to 1990, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, at FSU’s Opperman Music Hall, 120 N Copeland St.

The performance celebrates the “Sounds of Brazil” with dances that integrate the joyfulness and rhythm of the culture. Guest Choreographer Caleb Mitchell says, “My hope is that this work motivates the audience to develop an inquisitive mind and heart for Brazilian music, culture, and dance.”

Both Musical Director Deloise Lima and featured soloist Marcía Porter are of Brazilian descent. “This is very special for me.” says Lima, “Brazilian music is generally very colorful, vibrant, and full of energy. The combination of rhythms and colors is perfect for choreography.”

For TTB’s “throw-back” selection honoring the Golden Anniversary, resident choreographer Kathryn (KK) Karrh Cashin is re-staging one of her stand-out pieces, "Bolero."

TTB Artistic Director Tyrone Brooks says, “You don’t want to miss witnessing this magic for yourselves. So, please join us for the opening performance of The Tallahassee Ballet’s 50th Anniversary season.”

2022 Season: Here come the stars: FSU Opening Nights unveils 25th season lineup

Opening Nights goes to the movies

A heralded Florida State University film school alumnus will return to campus to present his latest celebrated film as part of Opening Nights at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29 at Ruby Diamond Concert Hall. Tickets are $20.

Oualid Mouaness is the award-winning director, writer and producer of “1982,” a life-affirming coming-of-age tale that has been recognized at multiple global film festivals, including Cannes. The film encapsulates love and tragedy set against the 1982 Lebanon War, and it will premiere in collaboration with the College of Motion Picture Arts.

"Historic Havana": The Havana History and Heritage Society is opening a new exhibit, “Historic Havana," at the Shade Tobacco Museum, 204 NW 2nd St., Havana, with a grand opening at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24.  This pictorial timeline features a presentation from local historian Dale Cox on the Town of Havana's history.

Marvelocity: The Art of Alex Ross, and a Superhero Opening Celebration! The Gadsden Arts Center & Museum, 13 N. Madison St., Quincy, celebrates superheroes and the amazing work of Marvel Comics illustrator Alex Ross with fun experiences for all ages at 6 p.m.  Friday, Sept. 23. Wind Orchestra (FSU Family Weekend Concert): Free concert Presented by Florida State University College of Music at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at Ruby Diamond Concert Hall.

Tallahassee Winds: A symphonic band consisting of some 70 community musicians, will open its 2022-2023 concert season at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, in Opperman Music Hall on FSU Campus. Admission is free.

Finn and the Kingsnakes: 7-10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at the Great Oaks Pub at Southwood, 3750 Grove Park Drive. This five-piece group features two female singers, and  multi-part harmony.  Their song list covers the best of the '60s and '70s. No cover, public welcome. Call 850-942-4653 for reservations. On Thursday, Sept. 29, Southwood hosts Bingo night.

Keith Taylor and the Elements: 4-7 p.m. Sunday at the Fish Camp at Lake Iamonia, 12062 Waterfront Drive. Keith Taylor who has been entertaining Tallahassee for two decades is now backed by the dynamic band "the ELEMENTS" with vocalist Gaia Jones.

Hot Tamale: On Friday, Sept. 23, the duo will be celebrating the birthday of Ray Charles in his hometown of Greenville, Florida, for the second year in a row.  At 6 p.m., Hot Tamale plus a few of their musician friends will gather around the statue of Ray Charles in the park in the middle of Greenville, and sing their favorite Ray Charles songs.  All are welcome to join in to pay tribute to the man from Greenville who changed the world of music. Greenville isa few miles east of Monticello on Highway 90.
