Thinking of seeing the Chiefs in the Super Bowl? Here’s how to afford the trip to Arizona

The Kansas City Chiefs are returning to the Super Bowl for the third time in four years, and people from Missouri and Kansas may be thinking of making the trip to see them play the Philadelphia Eagles Feb. 12 in Glendale, Ariz.

The Chiefs beat the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday night 23 to 20.

Super Bowl LVII tickets, on top of flight costs and hotel bookings, are sure to make for an expensive experience. With the game in less than two weeks, it’s important to make plans now so you’re not rushing or paying extra last minute.

We compiled a guide in how to find the best prices for your trip if you’re traveling from Wichita to State Farm Stadium in Glendale. Here’s what to know.

Where can I get my Super Bowl tickets?

Even though Super Bowl LVII is a little less than two weeks away, it’s not too late to purchase your tickets. However, keep in mind the tickets themselves might be the most expensive part of your trip.

According to TicketIQ, tickets for this year’s Super Bowl start at $5,663. Ticketmaster has prices starting at $5,653, and Seat Geek’s lowest price is $4,748. To find more information on the game and tickets, visit the National Football League’s website.

Before you settle on one price, make sure to shop around to get the best deal. Be mindful some ticket sellers charge a service fee on top of the ticket cost, so you won’t be looking at just the ticket and tax.

You can also keep an eye out for any radio stations to host ticket giveaways. You could luck out and snag a good seat for cheaper than you would have any other way.

Before purchasing your tickets, make sure you’re buying them from a valid site. Many websites may claim to sell tickets and look legitimate, but make sure to check reviews and be cautious before clicking purchase. If the prices seem too good to be true, it’s even more important to ensure the tickets come from a valid seller and not a scammer.

Always keep a copy of your receipt of purchase.

How can I find affordable flights to the Super Bowl?

When looking at flights, check with all the airlines, not just the one you’re most familiar with. If you are a constant flier with one airline and have points stored away for a special occasion, now could be the time.

If you’re planning on flying in to Arizona from Wichita Eisenhower National Airport the day before the big game and returning the Monday after, prices start around $600 round trip. United and American have the cheapest prices.

You might get better a price if you fly from Kansas City International Airport, which has nonstop round-trip flights from $187.

There are various booking sites that can offer cheaper flights. As always, if you’re using a booking app you haven’t heard of before, check the online reviews and make sure the app is valid.

Skyscanner is also a valuable tool when looking for flights within your price range. It compares flights, hotels and rental cars, so you can find the price that best fits in your budget.

Be sure to book flights as soon as possible. It’s possible flight costs change every day, so if you do see a price you like right now, it might be best to snag it while you can.

If you decide to not spend money on airplane tickets and instead choose to take the roughly 16-hour journey from Wichita to Glendale, keep in mind gas prices and how many times you’re going to stop and refuel. You can use apps like GasBuddy or AAA to check fuel prices along the way.

If you’re wanting to spread the road trip into two days, keep the overnight costs into account, as well.

What about hotels around Glendale?

By checking in with third-party booking sites, like Trivago, Hotels.com, Expedia and others, you might find some discounts and cheaper prices.

Trivago has rentals listed as low as $105 a night to more $1,000. Hotels.com has one availability at $213. The other properties under $250 are all sold out for the weekend of the Super Bowl. Expedia is similar to Hotels.com, with only three hotels listed around $250 that aren’t sold out as of Monday afternoon.

Just like with flights and tickets, it’s always better to shop around. Even with third-party sites, make sure to compare the prices with each other and see the prices when you directly book with the hotel. That way, you can know you got the best price.

If you’re traveling with a group, the more budget-friendly option might be booking a short-term rental instead of multiple hotel rooms. To find an Airbnb in the area in your budget, go to Airbnb’s website and you can filter what you see depending on what price you’re OK with.

Airbnb’s website has 159 properties listed available Feb. 11 to 13 for less than $300 a night.
