Third arrest made in connection to January homicide in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The Salt Lake City Police Department has made a third arrest in connection to the death of Gabriel Vigil, 18.

On Wednesday, Feb. 7, detectives booked Isidore Junior Barrera, 20, into the Salt Lake County Jail. He faces two first-degree charges for felony discharge of a firearm and 18 charges of second-degree felony discharge of a firearm.

Police were called to a birthday party at an Airbnb near 700 South and 300 East in Salt Lake City on Sunday, Jan. 14, around 2:30 a.m. after getting reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival they reportedly found Vigil lying dead on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound. Police counted at least twelve bullet casings nearby and several gunshot impacts in nearby parked cars and fencing.

According to court documents, homicide detectives learned a 17-year-old woman was kicked out of the party and reportedly told partygoers “wait and see what happens.” Moments later, a dark sedan arrived at the Airbnb and four men with handguns got out and later opened fire on the house while running. As they continued to shoot, one man – later identified as Vigil – was struck and killed in the gunfire.

Detectives said they allegedly identified Barrera and two other men who were with Vigil in the shooting. On Friday, Feb. 2, a 16-year-old was taken into custody, suspected of being one of the shooters. Due to his age, police have not released any further information.

SLCPD said detectives were still working on locating the fourth shooter to safely take into custody.

Shortly after the shooting, SLCPD detectives also booked Tommi Gallegos, 23, on obstruction of justice charges. Detectives believe she made false statements during their investigation to “hinder, delay, or prevent prosecution” in the investigation, according to documents.

Anyone with information related to the shooting is asked to call SLCPD at 801-799-3000 or submit an anonymous tip using the City Protect App.

Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
