EVANSVILLE — The man killed in a shooting near Third Avenue Tuesday was a 43-year-old former semi-professional football player.

Vanderburgh County Coroner Steve Lockyear identified the victim as Carlis J. Falls. According to an Evansville police news release, Falls was shot and killed in the 900 block of Oregon Street around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday.

He died at the hospital about a half-hour later, Lockyear said.

On Wednesday, police said they'd issued an arrest warrant for 30-year-old Fabian Bennett. They described him as a 5-foot-7, 245-pound Black man with short hair.

He hadn't been arrested as of Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Courier & Press archives, Falls was a running back for the now-defunct Evansville Vipers in the early 2000s.

Two contractors hired to work for Falls reportedly told police the shooter threatened Falls and shot him “as he attempted to retreat to his vehicle," police wrote in a narrative included in EPD's daily report. The shooter then reportedly went inside a nearby house.

Police obtained a search warrant for the Oregon Street home but didn't find the suspect inside.

Falls was the seventh homicide victim in Evansville in the last 16 days.
