Third landing incident reported at Pellston airport

PELLSTON — For the third time since May 25, a plane landed at Pellston Regional Airport with malfunctioning landing gear.

David Boyer, county administrator, reported to the Emmet County Board of Commissioners during their meeting on June 15 that another incident took place this week when “we had another airplane come in yesterday with two wheels not three.”

“Staff was there, prepared, ready for it,” Boyer said. “That’s three in three weeks. I don’t want to say our training is over, but hopefully we won’t see any more of those this year.”

This is the third such incident since May 25, when a plane landed with its landing gear up. On June 1, a pilot in a single piston engine prop aircraft landed at the airport with their rear main landing gear broke.

No injuries were reported in any of the incidents.

Pellston Regional Airport Director Ryan Bachelor had previously praised his staff’s training and response to the first two incidents. The response and cooperation from area emergency responders and agencies was also lauded.

“Everything worked out very, very well,” Bachelor said during the board’s June 5 meeting. “Because we do these exercises, our staff was ready and prepared. There was no loss of life and we were ready for anything that happened.”

Boyer echoed that praise on Thursday in response to the latest incident.

“Hats off to the pilots and the crew that were out there. Everybody’s been safe so far,” he said. “This plane was coming from a distance away, chose our airport knowing that the safety crew was there. Mutual aid was called. Everybody was on standby and ready to move in if there was a problem, and fortunately we didn’t have to do it."
